The popular novel by the Russian author Maxim Gorky ‘The Mother’ became more popular in Tamil Nadu when Kalaignar Karunanidhi did a poetic translation of the Russian novel in Tamil. Later lyricist Vijay who wanted to act then, decided to produce Kalaignar’s version with himself performing as the hero. The high profile pooja announcing the launch was held on October 20, 2007 at the Chief Minister’s residence. It was to be directed by debutante Bali Srirangam. Later the project was shelved.

Now after two years the project is being revived and the director this time will be Suresh Krishna who gave some of the biggest hits of Rajinikanth like Annamalai and Basha. The title of the film will be ‘Ilaignan’. Owner of the popular music channel SS Music Martin will produce the film with an estimated budget of 20 crores. The cast and crew for this classic are being finalized.
