That Ram Gopal Varma is fascinated with cops and gangsters is a known fact. He has made quite a few other cops films like (new) 'Shiva' and 'Contract'. Unfortunately both flopped miserably. It is apparent that now he wants to get it right with 'Department' though it also appears that he has mixed quite a few elements from these films in Amitabh Bachchan-Sanjay Dutt-Rana Daggubati outing.

"There are too many similarities with a quite a few other films as well and it is difficult to ignore them all for 'Department'", says an insider, "Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'Khakee' dealt with a senior cop (Akshay Kumar) and a rookie (Tusshar Kapoor), the story of which is still fresh in everyone's mind. On the other hand even though Tigmanshu Dhulia's 'Shagird' wasn't see by many, it too featured Nana Patekar and Mohit Ahlawat in a mentor-rookie relationship.

However Ramu denies any such influences for his films. He says, "I haven't seen 'Khakee' or 'Shagird' and hence I can't comment. Having said that, an experienced cop would always have an attitude and that's what you see in Sanjay Dutt as well in 'Department'. He is a bad ass cop but that doesn't mean he is a bad cop. It's just his attitude but again, you can't call him 'Dirty Harry' (Clint Eastwood) just because of that."

Fair enough Ramu, we get the point.
