There have come about movies galore like this one and of course one never usually gets tired of well crafted thrillers. Does '10 Kalpanakal', the directorial debut of editor Don Max hit the mark is obviously the question. The movie sure is a watchable one, albeit with some usual cliches and predictability. Adding to the charm is the presence of Meera Jasim who is back after a sabbatical. The script is only passable and the usual crime drama patterns mar the narrative at some point.

Meera Jasmin plays an ex-IPS officer Shazia Akbar in '10 Kalpanakal'. The plot unveils according to her narration addressed to a group of newly recruited police officers, of a unique case she handled while serving as an IPS officer, The case involved a pattern killing of some girls and the twists and turns that the antagonist offers. The movie follows the crime genre of revealing the identity of the offender in the beginning itself as unlike keeping alive any suspense as to the identity of the killer.

As the narration progresses one becomes aware of glaring glitches in terms of plot and execution. In plot, there are not enough gripping sequences that makes one engrossed in the proceedings. The connection of the serial killer suspect Victor (Prasanth Narayanan) to the forest officer Davis George (Anoop Menon) does not evoke enough drama. In terms of executions, the makers could have avoided over the top flashiness and loud unsettling music unsuited to such a narrative.

'10 Kalpanakal' takes a peek into the police and judiciary system in place. It is one of those movies along the lines of taking justice into hands, of avenging, of questioning the judiciary and pointing out loopholes in the law. The movie sure follows the trends of recent times in narrating such a tale, catering to some popular notions. Don Max's debut vehicle comes out as a decent attempt. Meera Jasmin once again proves why she is still a reckoned face in the industry. Prasanth Narayanan was impeccable as Victor. The myriad emotions that he showcases on screen has come off well. Anoop Menon delivers in his typical style. Kaniha's presence is also notable.

The movie can be watched to catch Meera Jasmin in action and a passable crime thriller. This might not be a stellar or profound movie, but Don Max has offered a decent outing with '10 Kalpanakal'.
