The Kerala State Film awards are notorious for the share of controversies that follow every announcement. This year, not much was there to complain, in the announcements by cultural minister M A Baby. Even then some of the director's who couldn't get the rewards they expected did manifest there dissatisfaction through many media.

Every one expected a show off from the famous director Adoor Gopalakrishnan' who was a regular award receipt for all his previous ten films. His ‘Naalu Pennungal’, screened earlier at Toronto and London festivals which was expected to win the best film and director ended up with two minor awards in art and costumes. More over the jury chairman noted Assamese director Jahnu Barua accessed that “the director failed to put together and connect the four short stories as a film". But Adoor was little moved with the verdict and remained tight lipped without comments.

But the man who seemed to have much wounded much with the awards announcements was K P Kumaran, director of ‘Aakashagpuram’ who was seen for the next two days in all channels screaming foul about the decisions. His film, majority of which was shot at London, didn't even have a mention in any of the sections.

Instead the jury was in all ears for 'Adayalangal’, directed by debutante M.G Sasi which fetched five awards including those for best film and director.

Shyamaprasad, director of Mammootty starrer 'Ore Kadal' also expressed his dissatisfaction for not selecting Mammootty as the best in acting as he found his protagonist's acting , much better than that of Mohanlal in 'Paradesi'.

Jagathy, who was given special award this year said that he has not yet decided whether to go to receive the awards, as many award committees before had never considered his worthy performances.
