As Kiran Rao has put it, her directorial debut ‘Dhobi Ghat’ is a tribute to Mumbai. Comprising of four stories, the film has mostly been shot on the actual locations, in the popular spots of the city.

Before the film’s shoot, Kiran had roamed various places in Mumbai and been in several buzzing localities and streets. The filmmaker had particular liking to Mohammad Ali Road which was very old, vibrant, busy and beautiful structures that reflected the bygone era. Kiran wanted to capture the very essence of this part of Mumbai.

She was wondering how they will shoot in such crowded locales with such a superstar like Aamir. It was then Aamir came up with this idea to shoot the scenes with hidden cameras. They planned that at a given point of time the actor will make his entry in his character’s costume and casually do his part, provided a unit person walks in front of him to lead the way.

Recalling the shooting times, Aamir remarked that it took only ten seconds for the people to realise that a star is amidst them and the word spread instantly. Aamir could hear people whispering his name and in a while he had followers behind him. “But I didn’t react, else it would have spoiled the act,” said Aamir.

Kiran in amusing tone stated that Aamir had had the ‘time of his life’, being amidst of millions of people. But then she revealed, “To our great delight it went out off very well and we got the moment we wanted; we actually pulled off what we had thought was impossible.”
