A coming of age feel good movie, ‘Aby’ conveys well what it sets out to tell. As expected from the trailers and songs, we have an inspirational tale here with Aby as the protagonist. What is notable is that Vineeth Sreenivasan too has come of age with this movie with a good acting to prove his detractors wrong. Director Srikant who made his debut with this movie has done well to narrate such a tale. Though not a typical entertainer, the motivational edge gets you glued to the seat.

Aby (Vineeth Sreenivasan) is the only son of Babychayan (Sudheer Karamana) and Clara (Vineetha Koshy). His mannerisms and lack of communication has his parents worried. His ever flailing hands and an obsession to fly makes people brand him as cuckoo. The young Aby played by Vasudev is just perfect for the role. While everyone hopes that Aby will outgrow this phase, he simply takes it to his adulthood in his innocent, child-like manner. The movie is more than just about the process in which Aby finally achieves his dreams, but is about values that run deep like honesty and family bonding.

There is sure a formulistic element in the plot with prodigy recognised, subsequent overcoming of hurdles and final triumph. But the way the movie has been narrated and the treatment given to the script makes ‘Aby’ an above average fare. Srikant can take a bow for his direction. Eccentricity is something that any society shuns. That struggle has been narrated well. The support of Animol (Mareena Michael) is well presented. Aju Varghese plays Aby’s friend, Kunjootan. Some element of humour is introduced with this character.

Characterization is spot on in Aby. Child artiste Vasudev is notable. The rest of the characters including Sudheer as the loving yet arrogant father and Mareena as the daring and lovable Animol is impressive. Another character in the movie is Idukki. After ‘Maheshinte Prathikaram’, Idukki is pictured beautifully in this movie. Techinically the movie is well made. Sky, Idukki, eccentricity, natural settings all appears alluring on Sudheer Surendarn’s lens. Bijipal and Jaison’s music blends with the narrative. Anil Johnson’s BG is in keeping with the tone of the movie.

‘Aby’ though predictable and lagging in parts is an engaging watch. It aims to engage with the heart and does so with gusto. With a good enough treatment and narration, catch the movie for its motivational and inspiring premise.
