Happy Birthday Sarathkumar

Today is the birthday of veteran actor R.Sarathukumar. It is hard to believe that he turns 62 today.

Sarathkumar worked as a journalist before entering the film industry. He is a fitness enthusiast and has won the Mr.Madras title before making it big as an actor. He retains his fitness till date and he is one of the few Indian film actors who look very young at the sixties.

Making his acting debut with the 1986 Telugu film 'Samajmlo Sthree', Sarath acted in supporting characters and negative roles in his initial years. He played the lead villain in Captain Vijayakanth's super hit film 'Pulan Visaranai' that released in 1990. Then he gradually emerged as a hero and became on of the top five heroes of the 1990s.

The success of phenomenal success of director K.S.Ravikumar's 'Cheran Pandian' was an important turning point in Sarathkumar's acting career. Sarath-Ravikumar combination is considered as one of the most successful combinations in Tamil film industry as the duo has churned out many super hits such as 'Band Master', 'Nattamai,' 'Natupukkaga' and 'Samuthiram'. His other super hits include 'Dasarathan', 'Vedan', 'Coolie', 'Ragasiya Police', 'Suriya Vamsam', 'Thenkasi Pattanam' and 'Arasu'.

Sarathkumar has acted in more than 130 films. Having carved a niche for himself as an action hero, Sarath has also acted in super hit family entertainers such as 'Samuthiram', 'Suriya Vamsam,' 'Thenkasi Pattanam' and 'Ayya'.

In the 2000s he emerged as a notable supporting actor Tamil and Malayalam films apart from continuing to act as the lead hero. His supporting roles in 'Jithan', 'Chennaiyil Oru Naal' and a few other films received widespread acclaim from critics and audience. In the 2012 blockbuster 'Kanchana' he dared to play a transgender character and emerged successful in its portrayal. He has also acted in some notable Malayalam films such as 'Pazhasi Raja', 'Christian Brothers' etc.

He turned director of his 100th film 'Thalaimagan' which however failed to rake in the moolah.

Apart from acting Sarathkumar has been a long-standing administrative member of the Nadigar Sangam. He has held the post of General Secretary and has served as the President for two consecutive terms.

Sarath is also one of the successful politicians. He first joined the DMK and rose to the rank of a Rajya Sabha MP of that party. During the 2006 Assembly elections, he quit the party and became a loyalist of AIADMK leader J.Jayalalitha. He launched a party of his own named as 'Samuthuva Makkal Katchi' and served a full tenure as the MLA of Thenkasi constituency between 2011-2016.
