Anthony Kaun Hai

Thursday, January 1, 1970 • Hindi Comments

TWO MEN, AN ASSASIN AND HIS VICTIM, THE QUESTION BETWEEN THEM IS...ANTHONY KAUN HAI!

Ever since this smart tagline was seen first with the suited-booted 'jodi' of Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi [much in contrast with the 'tapori' persona the two shared in 'Munnabhai MBBS'], there has been an intense buzz about this Raj Kaushal directed film.

One more addition to the Bollywood films shot in Bangkok, 'Anthony Kaun Hai?' was earlier titled 'One Night In Bangkok'. The story takes place across Krabi and Bangkok that brings to fore the escapades of Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi. The major difference here though is that both do not play buddies a la Munabhai series. Instead Sanju baba is after the life of apna Arshad! Why?

Because Sanjay Dutt plays Master Madan, a notorious hit man, for whom killing Arshad Warsi [who plays Champ] is just another job! But unlike the 'desi bhailog', both Dutt and Warsi are ultra cool, sophisticated, stylish and 'up-market' in the work they do! While Master Madan is literally a 'master' in his profile as a contract killer, Champ is literally a 'champion' when it comes to deceiving people. How?

Because he is a conman whose job is to dupe people and he has been quite successful in his endeavors so far.

There is more to the personalities of Master Madan and Champ than just the unlawful activities that they do. While Madan is perhaps the biggest Bollywood fan ever, what with every Hindi film seen by him and every character etched in his memory forever, Champ is a master of disguises and is said to have changed his persona more than the number of times he has changed his underwear in his life! Exaggerated? Yes! But something that truly drives home the point!

The game is set now. The cards are drawn. While Master Madan's target is Champ, for Champ it's a challenge to come out unscathed.

Master Madan and Champ - two men on the wrong side of the law but equally right when it comes to executing their job with sincerity and honesty. But Anthony Kaun Hai? What's his role in the entire episode?

Let's keep wondering while other characters in the film are introduced. They are Raghu Sharma, Jiya, Rosa and Suraj Singh!

To make the proceedings further interesting, Raghu Sharma [Ragubir Yadav] is a magician by profession who just like Madan and Champ is a master of his own game. But does he really have a task in his hands, pun intended, when one of his own tricks backfires. And now his own freedom is in trouble! He also has a beautiful innocent looking daughter Jiya [Minissha Lamba] who is holding on to two things - a BIG secret and her friend, a pigeon.

It's not as if it is only all work and no play for Champ. In fact he has the best of the two worlds with a sexy girlfriend Rosa [Anusha Dandekar] in tow. While Rosa too loves Champ with all her heart, her only misgiving is her impatience!

In the midst of all this 'tamasha' arrives detective Suraj Singh [Gulshan Grover], a no-nonsense cop in the Thai police force. His job is take on smart people since he is considered to be the smartest of the all. But would he be able to outsmart men like Madan and Champ? With a huge reputation looming large over him, this is a challenge that he would have loved to take.

Now would Suraj Singh be the one who would be able to answer the question - ANTHONY KAUN HAI?

Is it a suspense film? A comedy? A thriller? A gangster flick? Probably a mix of everything, after one looks at the interesting storyline and characterization in 'Anthony Kaun Hai?', a film by Nikhil Panchammiya. Himesh Reshammiya composes for the film that is slated for an August 4 release.
