In order to establish uniform taxation throughout the country, GST was rolled out starting this July 1st. Unfortunately, the state has added to the woes of the film industry by imposing entertainment tax above the GST.

In a GST council meeting held yesterday headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, tax slabs of some goods were reconsidered. Actor Arvind Swamy who is known for his socially inclined opinions took to twitter to criticise the government’s move.

The ‘Naragasooran’ actor quipped on the lower rates of intermission snacks as opposed to the cost of tickets which includes GST and also the state added entertainment tax. Joking about how Khakra has 5% GST , he stated one might incur high costs on a subsequent visit to the doctor as medical equipments like a stethoscope has 12% tax.

Arvind Swamy also called on for one nation with a uniform tax sans the extra tax levied separately by the states. On the other hand Vishal along with members of the Tamil Film Producers Council have decided to stall the release of new movies untill the state approaches with a favorable decision.
