First weekend performance of latest release

Will 'Krrish' outdo 'Fanaa'? That’s the question that was buzzing in the trade after a super June with 'Fanaa' and 'Phir Hera Pheri' turning out to be big money spinners. If initial indications are to be believed, it seems to have done that and that too by a comfortable margin. The movie opened BIG, really BIG as there were houseful signs across the country at multiplexes as well as single screens. The records created by 'Fanaa' and then 'Phir Hera Pheri' may be re-written at number of centers as statisticians continue to be busy over last few weeks. A 20 crore plus first week looks like a certainty as Roshan family strikes once again. Wish only the first half was as good as last 1 hour of the film and the film would have been a thorough entertainer from beginning till the end! 'Jadoo' was missed too!

Last week's movies

'Alag' took an extremely poor start at the box office as it failed to reach even half-crore mark in its first week. With a 40 lakhs beginning, it is one of the poorest outcome for a film that had managed some good reviews. There was not a single city where collections crossed even 10 lakhs, it surprisingly had Kolkata generating most revenue! Mumbai and Delhi were hardly impressive with around 5 lakhs and 1.5 lakhs respectively. A disappointing outing for a film that boasted of a new concept, one wonders if the film would have reached out to a wider audience if there were noteworthy actors in the film. Still, Akshay Kapoor can take heart from the fact that he has come out unscathed inspite of the film's BO outcome. An actor who has got noticed by the industry and should now soon have better offers in his lap.

From the past

'Phir Hera Pheri' had a brilliant second week as it showed a drop of mere 30% [when 40-50% drop is considered healthy]. With 12 crores added to its first week total of 17 crore, 29 crore after 2 weeks is simply magical for a film that took more than a year to be completed. Continuing its record breaking spree, the film came quite close to a 3 crore mark in Mumbai while Delhi contributed 1 crore as well. Ahemadabad shows great collections too with 80 lakhs in the second week. The film is now all set to be a 40 crore film even though the pre-release hype had indicated a 30 crore run. The film is now all set to be the biggest hit ever for Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Suneil Shetty!

All predictions around the film's fate after an average first week fell flat as the second week's billing was impressive to say the least. With only 35% drop, the film added on another 5 crores to make the collections upwards of 12 crores. While earlier it seems that the film would end at 12-13 crores, now the film is quite safe as a 15 crore plus total looks like a good possibility. Shahid-Kareena have another success after '36 China Town' though one still waits for a cozy love story from the two youngsters!

'Fanaa' held on well in the fourth week as well and registered only a 40% drop with collections to the tune of 4.5 crore. With just around a couple of crores away from an enviable 50 crore mark, it would be for the first time ever that a Bollywood actor would have two 50 crore super hits [first RDB and now Fanaa] and that too within a matter of two months! Old warhorses like '36 China Town', 'Gangster' and 'Tom Dick and Harry' are still hanging around though their collective contribution is a mere 20 lakhs last week!

In the future

No new movie has released this week as it is 'Krrish' wave all around. Also with 'Phir Hera Pheri' and 'Fanaa' doing stupendous business with 'Chup Chup Ke' hanging around well too, audience does not seem to be complaining!
