First weekend performance of latest release

The kind of hype that both Ajith's Varalaru and Silambarasan's Vallavan generated before its release was stupendous. As expected amidst other releases that include Vijayakanth's Dharmapuri, Thalaimagan starring Sarath Kumar, Vattaram directed by Saran and Jeeva's E, both Varalaru and Vallavan opened really big.

Interestingly Varalaru carried positive reviews and Ajith's performance as bharathanatyam dancer won accolades. More over the presence of big names like K S Ravikumar, Asin and A R Rehman added to expectations. The movie even pushed aside Shahrukh's Don in garnering good revenue.

Vallavan is doing well. A triangular love-story with twists and turns has been brought out well by the actor-director. However both the movies saw a sell-out weekend crowd. The songs set to tunes by Yuvan Shankar Raja in Vallavan managed to get crowds to theatres.

Interestingly, Vijayakanth's Dharmapuri is doing well, especially in rural centres. The newfound political image of Vijayakanth added with punch dialogues in the movie is doing a lot of good for the film. Vijayakanth's fans thronged the theatre in large numbers in the first-week.

Sarath Kumar's 100th film Thalaimagan featuring him in the role of a scribe also saw a good response. The presence of Nayantra and Vadivelu added strength to the film. E, which is carrying positive reviews, too managed a decent outing in the first week. The theme maybe new for the rural audience, it is one of the refreshing attempts this season and Jeeva’s sincerity and seriousness have been well recognized.

Also in the race is Vattaram. Arya, the latest heartthrob in Kollywood, in Saran's pacy screenplay to pull decent crowds. However the onslaught of monsoon and the cricket fever gripping the nation did have its impact on collections.

Last week’s movies

Ravi Krishna's KD and Bharath starrer Em Magan managed to put up a better show. Both the movies carried good reviews. While youth thronged the former, womenfolk lapped up the latter.

From the past

Suriya's Sillunu Oru Kaadhal and Jeyam Ravi's Unakkum Enakkum are nearing a milestone. While Sillunu Oru Kaadhal is all set to complete its successful 50-day run, the latter is inching towards 100 days. Both the movies have done well in various centres and the presence of popular stars in the movie worked out in their favor.Kamal’s Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu still enjoys good run. Class, as they say, is permanent.

Forthcoming releases

Get ready to welcome Madhavan - Reema Sen starrer Rendu, Srikanth’s Kizhakku Kadarkarai Salai and Vishwas Sundar's Ninaithalae this November.
