Rasiya Saajan - Ismail Darbar

IndiaGlitz   [Monday, May 21, 2007]

After the release of DEVDAS, one would have expected Ismail Darbar, composer of the film, to become more prominent in the world of film compositions. Instead he has only seen a steady decline as far as films are concerned and has been more visible on the television talent hunt shows. With his non-film album RASIYA SAAJAN, he would be looking forward to make his presence felt once again. Bringing together singers like Zubeen Garg, Udit Narayan, Shaan, Kunal Ganjawala and Hema Sardesai for the songs written by A.M. Turaz, he attempts to revive his musical career with RASIYA SAJAN.

Nihira Joshi, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa finalist, who has a hit track 'Mera Dil' [SALAAM E ISHQ] to her credit now, pairs up with Zubeen Garg for the title song 'Rasiya Saajan More'. A track that narrates the plight of a girl who is waiting for her lover to come and meet her soon, 'Rasiya Sajan' is a raga based track and is for those who are classically inclined.

There is a distinct Ismail Darbar stamp in the way Zubeen goes about rendering the version and if only the music video for the track was catchier, 'Rasiya Sajan' could have gone an extra distance. Harpreet Singh tries to convert this semi-classical number into a dance number by coming up with a 'dance-mix' number and even succeeds to an extent. One for the lounge, it makes for a surprising decent hear since one could hardly expect a track like this to be presented in such a manner.

From both the composition and rendition point of view, 'Dekhte Dekhte' is hardcore filmy. In fact one minute into the song and you almost start visualizing the song being picturised on Saif Ali Khan. Shaan, who has been a regular when it comes to singing for Saif, is in his characteristic young-n-playful act once again while Nihira Joshi who makes an appearance after a while is impressive too. A feel good number that doesn't fail to bring a smile on your face in the very first hearing, 'Dekhte Dekhte' is a surprise inclusion since after a relatively heavy title song; it comes along as a welcome relief.

Pray why does Zubeen Garg sound so much like Himesh Reshammiya in the way he goes about rendering 'Ranaiyan'? Well this is not all as even the music arrangements that go along as well as the musical instruments are completely from Himesh Reshammiya school of music. The only difference here is that the usual 'catchy feel' to the proceedings is missing here whereas not many would be even aware about what 'Ranaiyan' would mean. It takes more than just a couple of hearings for one to start getting a hang of what the song is all about.

Now this is what Ismail Darbar has been all about ever since the days of HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM. The sound that marks the beginning of 'Humein Maaf Karna' has an out and out Darbar feel to it. Also it is a pleasant surprise to hear Udit Narayan after a hiatus since he has barely been on the musical scene for around a year. A track that is quite easy on ears, it is for those who want their songs to have core melodious feel to them.

Kunal Ganjawala and Hema Sardesai pair up for 'Sajna' which unfortunately results in a tame ending for the album. A boring number which simply drags on for its entire 5 minutes duration, it belongs to the fast forward variety as it is neither fully classical nor a conventional romantic track. The choice of singers is debatable too as 'Sajna' fails to gather any excitement.

In the end it is left to ever-so-popular-and-foot-tapping 'Dola Re Dola' [DEVDAS] to appear in the album that gets back the vigor in the proceedings and reminds once again of an unforgettable soundtrack that Darbar had offered years back.

Overall 'Rasiya Sajan' turn
