Now this one is a compilation with a difference.
An Adnan Sami album is anyways special. And when it comes with a title like '7300 words' with as many as 32 of his greatest hits (well, it's a different matter than not each one of them is a hit), you know that you are in for a romantic treat. Add to it a special edition DVD featuring videos of as many as 26 songs composed by him and you know that it is hard not to be hooked on to this musical collection.
Though one may get an initial impression that '7300 words' would primarily contain songs from his non film albums like TERA CHEHRA, TERI KASAM and his just released KISI DIN, it is not really the case. That's because there are a dozen odd songs composed or sung by him for Bollywood films like LUCKY, AJNABEE, SAATHIYA, WAQT and many more which feature in this compilation.
The very opening of the album sets the right mood as the title song from TERA CHEHRA kick starts the proceedings. An ever likeable romantic track, it is a must-hear due to sheer melody and feeling of painful love. 'Dil Keh Raha Hai Dil Se', another chartbuster track from the same album, comes a few songs later and makes you fall in love with Adnan's melody and voice all over again. Ditto for 'Teri Baahon Mein' that never fails to revive the nostalgia of R.D. Burman - Kishore Kumar combo. Does one sense a 'Rim Jhim Gire Saawan' all over again?
Burman da's influence was prevalent in 'Tere Bina Jiya Jaa Naa' that has it's choice of instruments straight out of the 70s. 'Roothey Huey Ho Kyon' from the same album may not have been as big a success as the songs preceding it but Adnan's love for melody doesnt fail to leave his stamp. 'Nain Se Naino Ko Mila' establishes Adnan's strong hold over classical music yet again. Last but not the least there is a rollicking 'Kabhi Nahi' to get the mood rocking.
From his recently released 'Kisi Din', two songs are selected as a part of the compilation - 'Teri Yaad' and 'Kisi Din'. A poignant track about a man who has lost all with going away of his love and is remembering her every moment ever since then, 'Teri Yaad' is a must for all broken hearts. A melodious track in the mode of late 70s, 'Kisi Din' which follows a little later, is laidback and heavy on words. A song meant to be enjoyed with the lights switched off rather than being seen as a music video, it is a good follow up of 'Teri Yaad' as it gets into the mode of timeless romance that has no boundaries.
From his last album 'Teri Kasam' comes 'Kasam', a beautiful track that has sadly been eclipsed by some of his better known numbers in the last few weeks. The music company deserves a big thank you for reviving the songs from 'Teri Kasam' since 'Kasam' is a melody which deserves to be heard for years to come. Yet again, one is back to Panchamda's school of music as 'Kabhi Aisa Lage' comes to fore. 'Pal Do Pal' belongs to the musical style of the 50s and for the lovers of music belonging to the era long forgotten, it is a number good enough to be hummed along.
One would have loved to hear Adnan Sami's voice for the songs from his super-duper hit album 'Kabhi To Nazar Milao' but since the rights for the album lie with a different company, one has to contend with the voice of newcomer Chetan Rana. To the credit of Chetan, he does a near perfect imitation of Adnan, hence avoiding any break in the flow of the album. He along with Nihira Joshi (either as a duet or in solo) first sing 'Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein', title song 'Kabhi To Nazar Milao' and later 'Lift Kara De'.
The two are not just restricted to this song as they also come behind the mike for 'Hai Udi Udi Udi' [Saathiya], 'Gela Gela' [Aitraaz] and Tu Sirf Mera Mehboob' [Ajnabee]. Do they do a good job? Of course they do, hence avoiding the album from appearing gimmicky! Subha
