It was in the ‘80s that film music touched a creative slump for a few years. As that was the era when melody and poetry were seeped into the psyche of even the lay listener, who was informed about shaayari and good music, he rejected the discordant songs and went in for non-film music in a big way. At that juncture, Universal Music (then known as Music India) ushered in the ghazal-bhajan revival and brought an entire group of great talents into the spotlight.
In this unique but oddly-named compilation, Universal presents a bouquet of some of these artistes’ best ghazals on nasha (intoxication) rendered by names that are household celebrities today – Jagjit Singh(“Phir nazar se peela dijiye”), Anup Jalota (“Peete hain jhoom jhoom ke”), Bhupinder Singh (“Thodi sharaab pee loon”), Chandan Dass (“Woh bhi nasha hai”),Ashok Khosla (“Maine jo pee sharaab”), Pankaj Udhas (“Choom kar madhbhar”) and his brothers Manhar and Nirmal (“Maikhana maikhana”). As a bonus, there is also Ghulam Ali (“Saaqi pe ilzaam”) coming in from across the border.
And yes, far from sounding monotonous because the lyrics are on the same subject, the experience actually intoxicates. Hic!
