Police rule out foul play in Nafisa's death
IANS [Friday, July 30, 2004]

Police Friday ruled out the possibility of foul play in the death of model-turned-VJ Nafisa Joseph even as her mother said sour relations with her fiance had led her to commit suicide.

"The postmortem report states that Nafisa died due to hanging and no other reason," said Deputy Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta.

Gupta denied there were injury marks on the model's hands as was suggested by some members of her family and people from the film industry.

Her mother Usha Joseph said: "Nafisa had taken the extreme step due to a dispute with her fiance Gautam Khanduja."

Nafisa's marriage with the Mumbai-based businessman was supposed to be held Aug 28, a source close to the family said. "But due to some problems, her engagement was apparently called off at the last minute," the source said.

"The two had been seeing each other for the past 15 months. Gautam, who is already married, first met Nafisa at a nightclub," the source said.

Khanduja, who lives in Pali Hill in suburban Bandra, deals in automobile parts.

A police official said: "The two had an altercation over his divorce papers and that may have upset her."

Police say Nafisa and her mother met Khanduja at his Bandra house Wednesday evening.

"Her mother accompanied her back home to Versova and stayed overnight with her. Her friend Poonam came to visit them Thursday evening," a police official said.

Her friend P. Ramesh Menon Friday said he last spoke to Nafisa a couple of days ago.

"It was quite apparent that she was very excited about getting married to Guatam. She had spoken openly about him for quite some time," Menon told IANS.

"She was ever so keen to settle down in matrimonial bliss, but had broken liaisons in the past, which used to depress her.

"After quitting MTV, she formed a TV production company last year called 2's Company of which Guatam was the backbone," said Menon, who had done many photo shoots with Nafisa.

Another source said: "Her mom was not too happy about her alliance with Gautam who was previously married.

"There was an altercation about his divorce from his first wife, as Nafisa wanted to see the divorce papers - this was revealed to me by a police inspector."

Nafisa's family hails from Bangalore. Her father arrived in Mumbai Thursday night, police said.

Her mother, the model's close friend Poonam and maid Durga Bisai were present in the apartment when the incident occurred, police said.

The former Miss India reportedly discussed her impending death with them before locking herself in another room and committing suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.

"We are yet to record the statements of those present in the house, particularly Nafisa's mother and the friend since the family was in mourning and preparing for her last rites," Deputy Commissioner of Police Gupta said.

The body was handed over to family members after an autopsy at the Cooper Hospital in north Mumbai.

Family sources said the last rites would be performed Friday evening.

Nafisa won the Miss India crown in 1997 at the age of 19. Besides working as a model and a VJ for a music channel, she was also involved with an animal rights project.
