While there were three notable films releasing last Friday, there are two Hindi films arriving this weekend - 'Purani Jeans' and 'Kya Dilli Kya Lahore'. Between the two, while former is a feel good young musical entertainer set in the 90s, latter is a realistic tale about post-partition conversation on the border between an Indian and Pakistani soldier.
There isn't much competition that they would be facing from Hindi releases as there isn't much going for 'Revolver Rani', 'Kaanchi', 'Samrat & Co.'. However, '2 States' would enjoy a good number of shows even in its third week. Between 'Purani Jeans' and 'Kya Dilli Kya Lahore', former is all set to get a good number of shows as well as theater chain since it has the backing of Eros. The film's promotion has been decent; however due to newcomers in the lead, the footfalls would be entirely dependent on word of mouth and critical acclaim.
On the other hand 'Kya Dilli Kya Lahore' has been traveling the festival circuit for some time now and is finally hitting the screen. Vijay Raaz has not just acted in the film but also directed it. While the promo looks good, the promotion has been near to negligible, which would reflect on the film's opening too. Moreover, it would be releasing on far lesser number of shows and its theatrical run would be heavily dependent on reviews.
Meanwhile, the biggest challenge would come from Hollywood release 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' which is all set to take a major start at the box office. Having said that, one just feels that the hype could have been much stronger, given the brand name of the franchise and this is what would differentiate a good from a bumper opening that should ideally have been the case.
