Till the 1970s, most of the Bollywood movies were shot in a 35 MM format. For an average cinegoer, this translates as a 'non-cinemascope' movie, which means the picture you see is just about half the size of an average theatre screen.
'Sholay' was one of the first movies that took full advantage of shooting a movie in 70 MM format and came up with mind-boggling results.
1980 onwards, the percentage of cinemascope movies increased to more than 50% while from 90s onwards, the 35 MM format became more or less obsolete [with an exception of a few art house or extremely low budget movies].
But off late, there have been at least three high profile movies shot in 35 MM that have either been released or are about to be released. First to come was Manish Jha's 'Matrubhoomi' that released all over India 4-5 weeks back.
2 weeks back came '7 1/2 Phere' that seemed to have been intentionally shot in 35 MM format to give it a TV serial look. In addition to this, soon to arrive is Ruchi Narian's debut venture 'Kal' that has been shot in a similar format.
