'Chingari' may boost Mithun's languishing career
IANS [Monday, December 12, 2005]

Three-time National Award winner and dancing sensation of 1980s, Mithun Chakraborty, will soon be seen in Kalpana Lazmi's forthcoming film "Chingari" opposite Sushmita Sen.

Mithun made a comeback with Vikram Bhatt's "Elaan" this year. "Lucky" was his second release. Unfortunately, both the movies bombed at the box-office and Mithun's comeback did not simmer at all.

Lazmi's film might just do the trick for him.

The movie is already in the news for sensuous lovemaking scenes between the lead pair. Mithun is in a negative role in the movie while Sushmita plays a prostitute. Television artist Anuj Sahwney will also feature in an important role.

Though the storyline is still under wraps, the film is generating enough curiosity as it comes from the director of the acclaimed films "Rudaali" and "Daman".

Lazmi is famous for handling subjects in a soothingly realistic way without going overboard with emotional melodrama.

The 70s and early 80s belonged to Amitabh Bachchan. Another good actor Vinod Khanna had gone into oblivion after a hit like "Qurbani".

Rishi Kapoor had already established himself as a dancing boy. Anil Kapoor proved himself in "Woh Saat Din" while Jackie Shroff became the hero of the masses with his debut film "Hero".

It was in this scenario that one shy and lanky man, Mithun with a National Award tucked under his belt, was trying to create a niche for himself in Bollywood. A low-budget movie "Mrigaya" had earned him enough accolades and put his name on the producers' wish list.

Besides his acting potential, Mithun was an exceptional dancer. "Disco Dancer" released in 1982, made him an overnight sensation.

Mithun's popularity was undaunted throughout the 80s and he has some big hits of that decade to his credit.

Who can forget his awesome performance in "Agneepath" which earned him a Filmfare Award.

But the rise of another dancing hero Govinda put Mithun on the sidelines.

So much so that Mithun just vanished from the scene in the 90s. He started doing some scruffy B-grade flicks, which were an absolute contrast to what he did in the 80s.

These B-grade flicks did good business in the interiors and also brought in quick money for the producers, but it spelt doom for Mithun.

This year, however, has been a sort of a re-launch time for many yesteryear actors, including Mithun.

Jackie Shroff made his presence felt in "Antarmahal". Sharmila Tagore was impressive in "Viruddh" and the ethereal Waheeda Rehman is ready to sprinkle her charm in Aparna Sen's "15th Park Avenue".

Amrita Singh will be seen in Mahesh Bhatt's latest "Kalyug".

Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia revived their on-screen magic in "Pyaar Mein Twist". Hema Malini was amazing in "Baghban".

But one expects Mithun to be the pick of the lot. Everybody in the industry is aware of his talent and this includes his critics.

Plus the quintessential actor has got another reason to cheer now. Mithun's son Mimoh is all set to make his debut in Bollywood with the recently launched film "He". Hopefully, people will now get to see both father and son in many Bollywood films.
