Movies with great expectations that didn't work
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 04, 2006]

While every year brings with it a bunch of flicks that have failure written all over them, there are a few selected movies that throw a surprise when they turn out to be non-performers at the box office. And more often than not, it’s their own merits [or the lack of them] that cause this debacle. Here we list down 10 such movies that appeared to be potential entertainers before the release but didn't really find much appreciation from the audience.

1) Neal N Nikki

Yash Chopra may have been mighty surprised with the non-performance of 'Lamhe' more than a decade back. But this time around it was audience's turn to be surprised with this so-called coming-of-age film from the banner that boasts of churning out family entertainers. Neither was Neal N Nikki an entertainer, nor did it turn out to be suited for family's audience. This Uday Chopra re-launch backfired while Tanisha would be wondering what else remained for her to make her presence felt in Bollywood. This T&A show hardly impressed any!

2) Paheli

OK, so the movie has made it to the OSCAR nomination but for us Indians, it was still a no-show. Coming from SRK, this one was a quickie that had an excellent cast and supporting crew. But somehow the merger of art and commerce that may have sounded exciting to SRK and Amol Palekar didn't really win the hearts of an average cinegoer. Result was a good opening that went on a downslide as the word spread about its lack of entertainment quotient. The only release for SRK in lead in 2005, it may not have made any difference to his superstar standing but still will go down as one of his rare movies that didn't flavor amongst one and all!

3) Kisna

Nothing less than BIG is expected from THE showman Subhash Ghai. 'Kisna' was BIG too but call it the maker's ill-fortune that Vivek Oberoi wasn't really a hot property once the movie released. The music was excellent but failed to pick up while the inconsistent screenplay was a factor that didn't work in the movie's favor. 'Kisna's non-success proved that Indian audience rarely shows interest in watching period movies.

4) Taj Mahal

Too long in the making and even longer in the wings for release, when 'Taj Mahal' finally hit the marquee, there was no steam left at all, neither in the audience to watch the movie nor in the makers to publicize it properly. Result was a poor opening that wasn't helped by the fact that the story telling was inconsistent. One can't deny the fact that some of the sequences were quite effective while the battle sequences were some of the best in the world, but still expectations from a movie of this scale were momentous that 'Taj Mahal' couldn't really match up to. The only silver lining in this tale was the return of Pooja Batra!

5) Kyun Ki

Oh, how could this one go wrong! With Priyadarshan and Salman Khan coming together for a sentimental tale along with Kareena Kapoor and Jackie Shroff, this could have been one melodramatic tale where one would have loved to keep the handkerchief aside. Call it bad timing [as it released on Diwali day when people are in celebration mood], tough competition [comic riot 'Garam Masala' released on the same day and Akshay Kumar was on a roll] or sheer destiny that the movie had failure knocking on the doors from the first show of the release. One of the poorest starts for a Salman Khan flick, the movie re-established the fact after 'Phir Milenge' that Salman Khan fans want him to be a jolly and fun loving man on the screen - 'Lucky', 'MPKK' and 'No Entry' being case in point.

6) Home Delivery

No Sujoy Ghosh, you couldn't have done this to us. For many movie lovers who have become fond of Bollywood cinema especially in the multiplex era, you were the ultimate choice as a young generation director due to that delightful 'Jhankaar Beats' behind you. But with 'Home Delivery', things simply became confusing to the core. You could have been convinced about your script and screenplay while your starcast may have had a ball while filming this one but the fact remains that the audience were simply dejected. The plot didn't really come out while the story hardly seemed to be moving. Give us something better next time on!

7) Shaadi No. 1

This is one of those rare David Dhawan movies where one started seeing the signs of doomsday since the promos began. The glitz and the glamour was all there while the starcast led by Sanjay Dutt and Fardeen Khan should have generally performed. But stale jokes, absolute lifts from 'Masti', 'No Entry' and 'Ishq' and some below average music resulted in absolute disappointment for comedy lovers. This is especially surprising as in 2005 the talk of the town was comedy!

8) James

'Maar Dhaad', 'Dhishoom Dhishoom', 'Goli-Baari' - it was all there but somehow the audience was hardly in mood for action in 2005. 'James' came with a lot of promise, especially so since RGV had been raving about the subject for close to two years. Mohit Ahlawat was being touted as the BIGGEST debut maker of all [OK, so he wasn't there but good nevertheless] while RGV never minced words while touting 'James' as the new age 'Shiva'. The movie began well but faltered in the second half resulting in people saying good-bye to the movie as soon as it came. It would go down as the one of the cruelest flops for FACTORY!

9) Bhagmati

Many would be wondering that how could this part-live, part animation 'Bhagmati' be a part of the list, after all many didn't know about the movie's existence, let alone form any expectations. Well, the success of 'Hanuman' has prompted us to place this movie as one of the biggest disappointments. While a small movie like 'Hanuman' that came from a production house that was a relatively new entrant in Bollywood scene could reach out to the audience then much more could have been feasible for a biggie like 'Bhagmati'! Appearing to be one of those stale products that was suddenly lifted to make it ready for completion, it didn't find anyone interested - neither the audience nor the starcast.

10) Mr. Ya Miss

There was a hope, just a little hope, that probably Antara Mali would be able to pull it off in her first directorial flick. The promos, though loud, sounded interesting, Aftab and Riteish had been having a great record in comedy flicks and above all it was a season of comedy. But the final result was so disappointing that one could hardly find solace in the few select sequences that managed to bring on a chuckle. Antara Mali had herself to blame for the movie's failure. If only some other actress could have come up with a balanced rather than an over-the-top act for the Miss role, 'Mr Ya Miss' may just have told a different tale!
