Promo watch - Being Cyrus
IndiaGlitz [Monday, February 27, 2006]

"Who you let in can change your life" - that's the one line plot on which Saif Ali Khan's first English film 'Being Cyrus' is based upon. Directed by Homi Adajania, who makes his debut with this English film, 'Being Cyrus' has already been widely acclaimed worldwide in the film festival circuits and is soon arriving to a theatre near you this March.

Here we bring to you an exclusive promo review of this movie that promises to maintain a good balance between art and commerce.

The promo begins on an intriguing note with the sound of a ticking clock with a synthesizer in the background that creates an eerie feel to the proceedings. First shot features some sculptures seated in the dark with narration by Saif Ali Khan in the background that goes as:

Leo Tolstoy once said, "All happy families resemble one another, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way"

While the statement is being made, the camera takes a viewer through some photo frames followed by a shot that features all the three principal protagonists of the movie together. While Naseeruddin Shah and Dimple Kapadia [who play a Parsi husband and wife], are seated next to each other while merrily chatting away, Saif Ali Khan makes an entry with a food bowl in his hand, hence making a picture perfect of a happy family. This, despite the fact, that Saif is a paying guest to the couple.

Once the Tolstoy's statement has been made in entirety, Saif introduces himself as 'Hi! I am Cyrus' in his inimitable manner across a closed glass door. There is a surprise in store as the next shot has Dimple seductively pulling Saif towards him in a 'demanding manner'. Another prime character in the movie, Boman Irani, who plays Naseer's brother is shown at his hyper best when he yells 'You have gone mad or what' at someone. But the cake is taken by a scene where Dimple is chatting away to glory in a garden and simply freaks out on Naseer's sudden emergence behind her back. At this place, Naseer innocently tells her that he is merely looking for shoes. This is certainly going to brings laughs in a theatre.

A wedding shot comes in next where Boman and Simmone Singh (his wife) are seated next to each other with Naseer and Dimple behind them. A true Parsi wedding setting! And just when one thought if 'Being Cyrus' was all fun, frolic and celebration comes a horrific shot were Saif is shown drowned in a bathtub with his face staring right at you. A long knife wrapped in a piece of cloth comes alive on the camera and you realize that there is much more than what meets the eye.

A lesson of philosophy comes in next when a statement is made:

"Always remember son, once the game is over the king and the pawn go back to the same box".

An array of fast moving shots comes in next 4 seconds that give a dramatic flavor to 'Being Cyrus' with the most noticeable shot being that is a chessboard with the players laid down. Another shot that remains with you is the one where Saif is shown emerging back alive from the bathtub! A dialogue follows from both Saif and Naseer while the suspense feel carries over in the haunting'n'echoing investigation scene featuring the cop (played by Manoj Pahwa). A scuffle follows and the tension continues to build up as a back view is shown of a female removing her clothes. Investigation continues, Dimple is shown running in a lobby while Saif screams.

The promo's defining moment comes with the shot of a move being made on a board of chess with Saif Ali Khan commenting:

"And that my friend is a CHECKMATE"

But this is not where the promo ends because there is more mystery to the proceedings, In an imaginatively designed camera placement, a hand is shown hanging from a window of a building with blood dripping over from the fingers!

Made in noir film making genre, 'Being Cyrus' is a film about mind games where an audience continues to guess about what's in store for him at every instance. An obsessive, inconclusive, disorderly, and strangely humane story about an outsider struggling to get inside himself, 'Being Cyrus' is one of the most keenly awaited movies ever featuring Saif Ali Khan.
