Supreme Court Rejects Mahesh Bhatt Plea
IndiaGlitz [Monday, June 05, 2006]

Supreme Court has rejected the Public Interest Litigation filed by Mahesh Bhatt in favor of screening Aamir Khan’s Fanaa in Gujarat. According to the statement issued by the Court, the state government can’t be blamed for an unofficial ban on the film. The honorable Court at the same time has also assured that if the cinema owners would like to screen Fanaa, they will be provided with adequate security.

In what can be termed as a setback to the producers Yashraj Films, the multiplex owners in Gujarat have decided not to screen the film. Gujarat is the third biggest territory after Mumbai and Delhi from which huge profits come in. And with the continued abstinence, losses will continue to mount. But it can be said that the exhibitors in Gujarat are suffering a bigger loss and so is the state government which could have collected a hefty sum of money through the entertainment tax.

The general perception in Gujarat is that the forced ban on Fanaa is setting a bad precede nt. People are traveling all the way to Pune and Mumbai to see the Kunal Kohli directed movie. And in spite of the ban in Gujarat, Fanaa has collected a historic Rs 32 Crores in India itself. Its overseas collections are all set to be one of the highest for a Hindi Movie abroad.
