A chronicle of cinema and politics
IndiaGlitz [Monday, September 01, 2008]

Cinema is the modern day integrator of other platforms of art and crafts, culture, social orientation etc. This has encapsulated all interpretations about social actions, consciousness, awareness, interest by almost five generations across the sub continent. To put otherwise, it embraces all the contemporary issues in the region and tried to show an interpretation of individuals or groups who has some exposure over them.

There are few films which brought extensive attention and aroused mass consciousness about a contemporary issue are Awara, Mother India, Sholay and Bandit Queen right from the independence day to India of 1990s.

Political thoughts or propaganda in films started from the days of independence struggle itself. Several films based Gandhian ideals and modern thinks for social reforms as abolishment of polygamy, child marriage, communal hatred and division and other contemporary issues prevailed over at the time.

Films also stood for patriotism and other values in the post independence era to support government plans for growth of the nation.

Political interests of film artists started to emerge when certain favorite individual started to campaign for political parties. In the South, Tamil Nadu witnessed a movement which used cine as a medium for their ideological reach.

Later it started as a regular practice to woo crowd for political mileage at elections.

In 1984 Amitabh Bacchan became a Member of Parliament who had close proximity with Nehru-Indhra family. But he left politics with bitter experiences followed later. Apart from Amitabh, Raj Babbar, Jayaprada, Dharmendra & Hema Malini couple, Shatruhan Sinha, Vinod Khanna and other TV actors became MP's in subsequent years.

In the South MGR and NTR reached to CM post mainly supported from their Film popularity. Now it seems to be a trend for several actors not only plunge into politics but also start own outfits to serve the public in an open manner.

Recent arrival to the scenario is Chiranjeevi in AP to launch a political party following the foot steps of NTR. During NTR's time other actors such as Krishna, Jamuna also became MP's representing the Congress Party.

Now it seems to be each and every state has certain number of star campaigners for their political parties' irrespective national or regional levels.

This may caused by either vacuum in the party's agenda or peoples search for alternatives from some known face by believing they may deliver according to their postures.

Some socio economic or communal integration also back-up the actor's attempts to mobilize support on the basis of film popularity.

However, there are films criticize political system, selfish politicians and links between politicians, administration and mafia's gets exposed to some extend therefore to push up for changes in law and reforms in system's functionality.

It is since more or less accepted for a change or transformation through an actor turned politician it will be a get going for quite some time.
