IndiaGlitz [Saturday, September 06, 2008]

Rupali Dalal is a versatile Vocalist-one of the few prominent women exponent of the prestigious Kirana Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music. She has also gathered acclaim for her ventures into several other genres of music.

Rupali has successfully blended her strong base in classical music with several different styles and genres and her performances worldwide over the years have won her many plaudits.

After a decade's pursuit of music and training under luminaries like Ustad Niaz Ahemad Khan, Ustad Shahid Pervez Khan, and Pandit Murli Manohar Shukla and myriad concerts later, Rupali is ready to enthrall music lovers with her first album titled as "Badra".

"Badra" is a delightful, refreshing blend of different genres, gathering into its mellifluous fold such eclectic styles as lounge, Sufi Rock, Punjabi Folk, Hip Hop, Rajasthan folk and Hindi pop fusion.

The music for Badra has been scored by Sanjeev and Darshan, sons of renowned composer Shravan Rathod, the melodious lyrics have been panned by veteran Hindi film lyricist Sameer, Simple yet catchy, the lyrics are endowed with a romantic undercurrent that is sure to appeal to music lovers of all ages. The music will be released by Times Music

The tracks which have a strong base of Indian melody are comparable to the best on the international scene.

Rupali belongs to the Kirana Gharana of Hindustani classical music which represents one of the most resplendent traditions of music in India. Pandli Bhimsen Joshi and Gangubai Hangal have been the most prominent artists of this Gharana, in which music is offered like a flowing, dancing stream which both energizes and cools the mind and sets the soul on its path of divine bliss.

Rupali has been trained in the Kirana Gharana gayaki by maestro Niaz Ahmed Khan who belongs to the legendary duo Niaz Ahmed Khan and Fayaaz Ahmed Khan. Together they have produced music -magic with their fantastic tans, brilliant ornamentation and colourful presentation of ragas. These qualities are well reflected in Rupali's music. She sings with a rare insight into each raga, adding a touch of passion.

In a brief span of just ten years, Rupali has earned the respect and appreciation from audiences and critics all over. She has given performances in several Indian cities and in many countries across the world which includes UK, Switzerland, Germany, USA, Canada, Malaysia and Singapore. In the last few years, she has also performed under the umbrella of the Times Foundation with masters like Ustad Shahid Pervez and Ustad Zakir Hussain. She has had the privilege of performing on the same dais as Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and other luminaries of the music world.

Rupali finds time for regular riaz (practice) and has added power and subtlety to her performances year after year. Her concerts have grown in beauty coupled with a sturdy knowledge of the intricacies of music — making them a unique combination of precision and artistic expression.

The versatile vocalist says: born into a traditional Guajarati family, art has always been running through my veins. My parents, Jitendra and Leena Sheth have always encouraged me to be an artist. Initially I was interested in learning various forms of dances, varying from Odissi and Kathak. In coming years Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan took me under his wings and helped me realize my love for Indian classical music. Appearing in front of masses, followed by conducting shows and concerts has driven me as a vocal artist. I consider music as an answer to my prayers, under constant vigilance it grows and you have been able to witness my rise. I draw essence for my music from spirituality and seek tranquility in turbulence. Several maestros and legends have helped me realize my vision and I will always be grateful for their contribution.

Early spring, Rupali was part of the famous MUMBAI FESTIVAL, which drew performers from all around the world.

Rupali Dalal's talent has now been presented through Badra which will surely mesmerize her listeners with fusion music. Rupali is able to sing with rare insights into each raga, adding a passion that is at once enchanting and riveting. She has been very creative to bring together different aspects of Indian culture, fused with contemporary melodies. The album signifies the love which unfolds between two lovers, longing for each other's presence. Incorporating music styles from different genres starting from rhythmic Arabic influences to soulful, full throated Rajasthani folk, Badra will live up to its propaganda.
