Deepa Mehta to direct "Midnight's Children"
IndiaGlitz [Monday, November 10, 2008]

Salman Rushdie's epic novel "Midnight's Children" came out in 1981 and catapulted the author as one of the most brilliant writers of Indian origin by winning the coveted Booker Prize in 1981.

This book which is also regarded by many as one of the greatest books of the last 100 years by winning global recognition had a strong influence on many Indian writers who rose to fame in the 80's and 90's.

This larger than life literary masterpiece of Mr.Rushdie is now going to come alive on the big screen of Bollywood.

Internationally acclaimed film maker Deepa Mehta and Salman Rushdie have agreed to join hands for bringing the story into celluloid.

The screenplay is to be jointly created by the film maker and the writer for the screen adaptation which will come to the theaters in 2010.

Although many film makers have previously approached Salman Rushdie for making a film based on the famous novel, nothing worked out due to several reasons.

Anyone who has read "Midnight's Children" will agree to a simple fact that only a seasoned and extremely talented film maker will be able to do justice to the slightly complicated story.

Enough and more patience is needed for making the experience of reading "Midnight's Children" a pleasurable one and when the novel stands on top of the list of the one of the most famous novels in the world, the person who wishes to give it the texture of cinema needs to be extra confident.

But from the words of Mr.Rushdie, it seems that he is hundred percent confident on Deepa Mehta's cinematic sense.

He said that Deepa's passion for the book and her immense talent as a film maker means that the novel has been placed in the best possible hands.

The book tells the story of Saleen Sinai born during the exact time when Indian flag replaced the British flag after the country got its freedom from the foreign rulers on August 15, 1947.

Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das have been already finalized to give life to key roles in the movie.

"Midnight's Children" has also the unique accomplishment to have won the best of the Bookers during the year 1993 and 2008.
