'Dev D'- another one born out of 'Devdas'
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, December 11, 2008]

During the time Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay penned down his famous immortal love story 'Devdas' he would have never thought that through the passage of time the attraction towards his work will only increase and according to the changes in the life styles of the society, new shades of expression will be invented keeping the tragic touching love story as the centre point.

Till now starting from the year 1928, 11 movies have been conceived from the work originally written in Bengali in 1917.

Out of these 11 projects, two in the pipe line are 'Dev D' and 'Aur Devdas'.

The most remembered one among the "Devdas" movies till the start of this century was the one that came in 1955 directed by Bimal Roy. It had Dilip Kumar as the hero and Suchitra Sen and Vyjantimala as the heroines.

In 2002 Sanjay Leela Bhansali added his colours of imagination and roped in Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit and made his own 'Devdas' which became a run away hit.

Now it is the turn of Anurag Kashyap to present the basic story but in his own ways traveling through an entirely different track molding his version in such a way through which the contemporary youth will be able to smoothly relate with the happenings.

Abhay Deol who plays the protagonist in 'Dev D' is the person responsible for igniting the spark in Anurag's mind.

When Abhay narrated a tale about a particular guy's life in London and put forward an idea to use the story as a focus point for an urban movie, Anurag got hooked right away and soon constructed a script.

With this movie the director behind such films like 'Black Friday' and 'No Smoking' hopes to break his image of an film maker who prefers only making movies for a certain section of film lovers.

'Dev D' will be the first fully commercial creation of Anurag complete with numerous songs and other elements that will satisfy all kinds of movie watchers.

Two new ladies are also making their debut in Bollywood through this flick.

Mahi Gill was discovered by the director at a party and after watching her performance in some Punjabi movies, she was chosen as one of the lead actors.

Although she was one of the last to do the audition, Kalki Koechlin fitted in perfectly with the image of the character that Anurag had in his mind and she grabbed the role.

Syudhir Mishra is another film who has got inspired from the love story and his film titled as 'Aur Devdas' is again having a different atmosphere in which the story unfolds.

No other information has been given out to the press other than the knowledge that politics play an important role in this flick.
