Chora liya hai tumne jo dil ko…” and the lady truly went on to win our hearts. Who can forget her dreamy eyes in ‘Hare Raama Hare Krishan’ and her intoxicated swaying figure in the movie’s song “Dum maaro dum” – a song which hit the chart numbers in 70s. She went on to be crowned as sexy queen of the bygone era, attracting controversy for her minimal clothing like in ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’. Seductively draped in saree in the movie, she looked far from vulgar, compared to contemporary fashion styles. But in those days it was something like a taboo on Indian screens. Zeenat Aman stood by her work and determination and highlighted Hindi cinema with considerable number of notable films and performances.
Zeenat Aman has been one of the reigning actresses between 70s and 80s. Her characters mostly portrayed a sophisticated uptown girl, which oozed with grace and glamour. Zeenatji had been bold enough to show skin in a refined style and dignified manner. In ‘Don’ we saw her tomboyish nature, then in ‘Laawaris’ saw her haughty yet humble side – few examples for her variety of roles.
Miss India runner up and Miss Asia Pacific (1970), Zeenat Aman broke the stereotypical roles in Hindi cinema, blooming with much colour and class through the kinds of characters she chose. She went on to earn several Best Actress Awards and later few Lifetime Achievement Awards in her film career.
Now, one can see her back on screen with ‘Dunno Why or Na Jaane Kyon’, directed by Sanjay Sharma. In this movie, the director is said to have recreated the magic of Aman’s popular song of ‘Yaadon Ki Baarat’ – “Chura liya hai”. She will be featured in the similar costume which she had worn in that memorable song, complete with the guitar. Zeenatji is said to be playing a glamorous mom in this one! The classic beauty is said to be glad to face the camera again after a gap. Although she had done ‘Boom’ and ‘Ugly Aur Pagli (special cameo)’ some years back, ‘Dunno Why…’ is something exciting for Zeenatji. “Some things you can never forget and for me acting is my life line. It has given me everything. Putting on the grease paint, waiting for the director’s cue, slipping into another character, this is what I have done for so many years and I am happiest doing films,” gushed the charming actress.
Along with her one can see another glamour beauty of the Golden age – Helen. After a long gap both the yesteryear heroines met on the sets of this movie. Recalling the movie’s shoot, Zeenat said, “I last shot with Helen for a film called Ram Balram where I played her daughter. We shot for a schedule in Goa and it was so fun. The cast is an ensemble cast of me, Helen, Kabir Bedi and Parikshit Sahni, and the film, Dunno Why or Na Jaane Kyon is about a Catholic family living in Mumbai.” Both the actresses seem to have nice time reconnecting and reliving the old memories.
Today, Zeenatji steps a year ahead into her age. We at IndiaGlitz wish her healthy happy life. May she keep her enigmatic spirit alive and even grace the screens in the years to come. Hope she has a wonderful birthday today…
