It’s an occasional treat to witness the eminent Bachchan family under one roof. And, the Bollywood’s first family looked a picture perfect pariwar at a recent event.
Amitabh Bachchan, his wife Jaya, their children Abhishek and Shweta and their sparkling bahu Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan – all had come together to celebrate the 102nd birth anniversary of noted poet late Harivansh Rai Bachhan (Amitabh’s father). The family was also accompanied by their dearest friend Amar Singh.
The event titled ‘Bachchan Sandhya’ was organized by Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, which was held at the BVB auditorium, Chowpatty on Saturday. Pushpa Bharti, wife of the late Dharam Vir Bharti, eminent poet and former editor - Dharmyug, Hindi magazine, co-hosted the event.
The occasion was commemorated with the launch of "Madhushala - The House of Wine"; a book that contained famous works of the poet. The book is designed in a format that contains both the original and the English translation of poems side by side, interspersed with illustrations of paintings done by granddaughter Namrita A. Bachchan. While the English translations are done by Marjourie Bolton and Ram Swaroop Vyas, the foreword is penned by Amitabh Bachchan.
To give an insight about the book’s earlier version - the original book, ‘Madhushala’ was conceptualized and written in 1933-34, with its first publication in 1935. The highly metaphorical work played an important role in the Chhayavaad literary movement of early 20th century Hindi poetry and is still venerated for its Sufi intonations and philosophical undertones.
Coming back to the event… Amitabh Bachchan had recited few poems from the book as his family supported him on stage. Several biggies of the screen town had graced the event like Tina Ambani, Ashutosh Rana, Sachin Khedekar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Govind Nihalani, Rahul Bose, Prasoon Joshi, Om Puri, his wife Nandita and many others.
