Bollywood continues to weep as flops pile up

IndiaGlitz [Monday, May 23, 2011]

There were as many as four films that released in quick succession but other than 'Ragini MMS', none of them managed to rake in some moolah. 'Stanley Ka Dabba' did gain some critical appreciation for itself but that wasn't good enough to take it past the safety mark.

Let's talk about 'Ragini MMS' first. With over 6.5 crores coming in from the Hindi version, the film did end the first week with its head high. However that didn't mean that there was much audience appreciation. An extensive release meant that for the makers it was a winning preposition but the fact that cannot be denied is that if the sequel is indeed made, it would have to be much better than this one. A unique treatment and some smart promotional campaign did ensure that the film was safe but audience too would be much more demanding next time around. With nothing much happening for the film in the second week, 'Ragini MMS' would be ending its run as a coverage affair.

'Stanley Ka Dabba' stayed on to register 2.5 crores in collections as it's first week came to a close. It garnered appreciation but the kind of escalation that the makers would have been expecting was definitely missing. The numbers are quite low and it would have to be seen how much does the film collect more before 'Ready' dominates screens starting 3rd June.

'Shagird' and 'Love U... Mr. Kalakaar!' didn't even enjoy a waiting period for themselves as they have totally crashed at the box office. First week of the Nana Patekar starrer was a mere 2 crores and with not many theaters, whether multiplexes or single screens, playing the film in their second week, it is doomsday already for this Tigmanshu Dhulia affair. Really disappointing because the film definitely deserved much better for itself. One now waits to see how the film performs on satellite channels because it has the potential to be enjoyed on many a re-run from this point on.

As for 'Love U... Mr. Kalakaar!', the film didn't even see a starting point for itself, let aside seeing any kind of critical acclaim or sudden rush helping it's cause. A loser at the box office, it made a quiet entry and an even quieter exit at the box office. Except for the cast and crew of the film, no one can really be expected to mourn its failure.
