South Africa India Film and Television Awards (SAIFTA) by Celebrity Locker is the first of its kind awards ceremony bringing Bollywood to Durban to felicitate talent from both countries in the sphere of cinema and television.
This project by Celebrity Locker, the Mumbai-based events company is aimed at strengthening the bond between India and South Africa by enhancing the exchange of cultural elements in entertainment, talent and technical expertise between the two countries.
SAIFTA promises to be a never before seen annual cross-cultural award night in Durban packed with a host of South African and Indian dignitaries.
A curtain raiser ceremony was conducted to unveil the trophy, logo and other collateral on 22nd March in Durban, formally announcing the property which ties in two countries. The curtain raiser event achieved its aim to cement relationships between South Africa and India and create opportunities for the exchange of talent.
Glamorous Bollywood stars who jetted in for the event included, Dia Mirza, Shilpa Shirodkar, Richa Chaddha, Raveena Tandon and Farah Khan, who is on the SAIFTA judging panel.
Members of the twelve strong panel of judges who were present included India's Farah Khan and South Africa's Welcome Msomi, who has just been appointed director of The KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission; Leleti Khumalo (actress), Linda Bukhosini (CEO and creative director of The Playhouse Company) and Caroline Smart (theatre personality). The South African panel is also joined by Saira Essa (TV producer) and Peter Rorvik, former Director of the Durban Film Festival.
The Indian panellist include the iconic Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman, Shabana Azmi, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Boman Irani, Farah Khan, and Mukesh Bhatt, who will be present in Durban in September 2013 to judge, nominate and present the SAIFTA awards.
