Is your character based on NDTV's Barkha Dutt?
The only similarity is that both Barkha and Romila were seen reporting live in Ladakh... "Lakshya" is as real as it gets. Romila is the closest character to Preity that I've played. She's curious like any journalist.
Did you feel like a journalist?
I'd ring up my director Farhan Akhtar and badger him with research details. He thought I was a nut. Like Romila, I'm not a frivolous person. She uses no make-up, just puts up her hair and steps out. The only make-up I've used is the heavy kajal (kohl), which a lot of female journalists apply.
"Lakshya" is your third film with Hrithik.
Yes, I think we really work well together. He says his wife Susanne is my best friend in real life, but he's my best friend on screen. We really complement each other so well together. The only other co-star who gives me as much space as Hrithik is Shah Rukh. He's just so amazing! He's beyond any ctor.During "Kal Ho Na Ho" I didn't know him that well.
There was a misunderstanding during "Dil Se".
Not really a misunderstanding. We were just not friends. Now during this film that we're doing together for Yash Chopra I've become so fond of him! I take my time to come close to people. Once I do, I'm a friend for life.
Will ("Lakshya") be your next release?
No, it's "Dil Ne Jisse Apna Kaha" with Salman Khan. It was supposed to be a guest appearance. But now they've added another song for me. Then comes Yash's film...
Let me tell you it's a great honour to work with him. He's beyond any director I've worked with. In spite of being so huge -- you can't be any bigger than Yash Chopra -- he's so humble and so alive. He's got a crazy sense of humor. He makes me feel like a queen on the sets.
Do you think "Lakshya" will work?
It has already worked for me. With me, when I see my film for the first time, I should feel satisfied. "Lakshya" was so tough to film. It's such an authentic representation of the Indian Army. I love that.
