Kunal Kapoor: Proud to be an Indian!

    Wednesday, April 12, 2006
So, thanks to RDB, Kunal Kapoor has bagged his first brand endorsement: from the new shirt brand ''Indian Terrain''. Of course, he would have preferred more films than he''s been offered so far, but we know that Kunal is an excellent actor capable of doing extremely well in the most demanding roles.

The Indian Terrain CEO said that his 3-year-old Chennai company was looking for a face that could represent the contemporary Indian male who was proud to belong to India. And anyone who''s seen Kunal''s simmering performance in RDB will agree he fits the bill completely. spoke to Kunal on the occasion. Excerpts from the brief interview:

Do you think this endorsement is due to post success of RDB?

Yeah definitely! RDB has given my career a new dimension. A new high.

Did you sport a particular look for the ad campaign of Indian Terrain?

Not really, they just told me to remain the way I am. I have now chopped my hair but for the campaign they were little long. Also there is no clause that I have to wear that brand every time.

What made you select Indian Terrain when you were getting offers for other brands as well with more money?

Yes I was offered more money by other brands but I liked the ideology of Indian Terrain because this was one company that was truly proud of being an Indian and wanted to put India on the world map. I believed in the same idea that one should always be proud of one's motherland because it has given us so much. This is a two-year contract.

After Meenaxi, for close to two years, you had no films. Did you ever think of giving up acting then?

Never! Acting is my passion and I cannot leave it for anything. I have been getting more offers now but it is on consideration stage so I cannot speak much about it right now. But yes, for two years after Meenaxi I was doing a lot of theatre and then Rang De Basanti happened. So I can never be away from acting.

Do you have any role model?

I don't have a particular role model in mind but every now and then when I meet influential people I say to myself that I want to be like them. For me success in this industry means having a long queue of producers outside my house waiting for me to sign their films!

How did the Indian Terrain approach you?

Some time back they came to me saying they wanted a face like mine to represent their brand which was Indian yet global in outlook. And within 10 minutes I decided that I wanted to be a part of it. Within three weeks we were ready for our campaign.

Do you have any particular role in mind?

Not really. I am open to all kinds of roles. I would also like to work in art films, as nowadays there are no differences left between art or commercial or a crossover film. I really liked Meenaxi but unfortunately it didn't work well.

    Any other endorsements right now?

    Not currently.

    Any message to your fans?

Just that keep appreciating my work and watch my films!
