How come you thought of venturing into film production?
I just decided that at some point of time I would want to do something else. It doesn’t mean that I would give up photography or I don’t want to be a photographer any more. I would definitely continue doing photography. But it is just that I wanted to experiment with other avenues and just figure out what it’s all about, to get associated with the process of filmmaking. Once you’ve seen filmmaking so close you definitely want to move in and enjoy the whole process.
How difficult was it to generate funds for this movie considering there are so many special effects in ‘Alag’?
Yes definitely funds don’t come easy. But if you are convinced about what you are doing and there is conviction and if there are people out there willing to back you for what you are worth then definitely it will happen. And I have been blessed that there are people who were willing to be a part of this. And they’ve just been very very generous and very lavish with their feelings.
Considering you are an ace photographer, did the idea of doing cinematography or direction ever occur to you?
I definitely didn’t look in the direction of cinema purely because I don’t think I am trained enough to become a cinematographer. I definitely am thinking of directing a film and I will do that in future when time comes and I think the script is right. I don’t think I can direct a film at this point of time.
You've clicked so many glamorous beautiful faces, how come you thought of a subject where the protagonist is a bald guy?
Life is not all about candy floss. Even when I am shooting with celebrities, with the most beautiful faces and most beautiful bodies, I usually end up projecting them in a very different fashion. I don't do the typical hair flying, skirt flying, outfit flying kind of picture. I like to do some level of believability in my pictures. And I think when we project someone with a slight flaw in it there is a sense of like ability in it, because there is a sense of identifybility. And that is what I believe in. When I heard the script of ‘Alag’ I just fell in love with and I knew that this is the kind of stuff I would want to be associated with. Five years down the line when I sit with my family and watch this film, I don't want to be embarrassed about it. And that is what ‘Alag’ is all about. It is something I am proud of. Five or ten years down the line when I am sitting and chatting with my kids then there will be stories that I can tell them and I don't have to shrug a few things under the carpet.
It was screened at IIFA. How was the experience like?
That was a complete privilege. It was an honor. Purely because, I was completely floored by it. I am a first time producer and to come across such a platform was great.
There is a promotional video where Shahrukh, Sushmita, Preity, Karan Johar and others have joined in. How did this idea happen?
When you look into television these days, a lot of products are endorsed by celebrities. It does bring out a change in their sales. Obviously people out there pay attention. With this video what we have done we just got lots of celebrities, lot of good friends come together and say that hey we believe in this film. And I know that it’s not your typical candy floss film, but I believe in this film. And I think you should see this film. Obviously it got a great deal of attention for the film.
Any plans for a sequel?
We had planned the sequel even before we started the film.
