Shankar Mahadevan: “Himesh Has Achieved Something Remarkable”

    [Interview by Faridoon Shahryar]
    Saturday, August 12, 2006
“Himesh Reshamiya may be getting repetitive but I think he has done his bit,” says Shankar Mahadevan, the music composer-singer par excellence. The Amar of the Amar Akbar Anthony trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, this good natured musical sensation is a classically trained singer who has been featured in several world music albums. A live performer that sets the stage on fire, Shankar has come a long way from singing hit Add Jingles like ‘Kuch Khaas Hai Hum Sabhi Mein’ for Cadburys Chocolates to being acknowledged as the idea man behind the spectacular success of hits like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ and ‘Bunty Aur Babli’. With Karan Johar’s ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ having released yesterday, we bring an exclusive IndiaGlitz interview with Shankar Mahadevan:

KANK released yesterday. What are your expectations from this Karan Johar film?

People have been waiting for KANK for a long time because it is one of the biggest films of the year. Music is top of the charts anyway. It is one of the finest films Karan Johar has made till today. I am sure people are going to like it, enjoy it. I hope more and more people watch the film and make the film a super duper hit

    Why should one watch KANK?

This is a film which is leaps ahead of what Karan has made so far. It’s got some of the finest star cast, finest lyrics, finest locations. I think it is one of the finest films of this year.

Mitwa has been applauded throughout the world

When we composed Mitwa, it was a different kind of song unlike than what Karan generally does for his films. We had heard Shafqat Amanat Ali a year back and we really liked his voice and we had decided to work with him anyway for some project or the other. And when we made Mitwa, we thought his voice will suit the song. And it worked.

What makes Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy such a formidable team?

I think we always reinvent ourselves, we are always looking for fresh voices, arrangements, territories that no one has gone in before, not even us. That’s a process of music making we adopt. It takes time

The music of KANK is somewhat similar to Kal Ho Na Ho

No, melody is different, arrangement is different, words are different, the theme is different. The only similarity is the production house.

Lots of Big releases starring Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy music coming this year

All our big films are with big banners, with directors who are passionate about their film. And we have to be passionate about the work we do. Each film’s music score is completely different from each other. And I think you all are going to get a very very wide variety. .

The music of DON is really rocking

It’s Farhan Akhtar. When you are working with Farhan then your head is working in an altogether different direction. KANK is more melodious, traditional, more Indian sound, sufi. But Don is more cutting edge, more modern, very rock, very techno, industrial.

What about Khaike Paan Banaras Wala?

Khaike has been sung by Udit Narayan. And he has sung it beautifully. Even Shahrukh has also lent his voice. That’s a surprise you shall have to wait for the movie to release.

Something about your stint in south India

My South Indian musical career is going parallel with what is happening in Mumbai. There I sing in four languages Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam. And those songs are as popular as ‘Disco’ or ‘Kajra Re’.

Himesh Reshamiya seems to be tiring down after a great year

I don’t think he is tiring. Maybe he is getting a bit repetitive. But he has done his bit. People are listening to his voice. He has come, got into people’s mind, achieved success. And in this country it’s really difficult to do that. He has achieved something really remarkable.

    What are your future products?

There’s Shaad Ali’s ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’, ‘Salaam-i-ishk’, then there’s ‘Marigold’ with Salman Khan, There’s a film by Aamir Khan Productions where Aamir is featured as well, there’s a film by Sajid Khan ‘Hey Baby’, A film with Anil Kapoor, then there’s a film by Zoya Akhtar….We have our hands full.

The name of Aamir Khan’s film has been announced?

    No…Not yet.

Alisha Chinoy continues to rock US cities with ‘Kajra Re’

Well we did our thing. All the parameters of the song, the lyrics, the melody, the picturisation, the orchestration, everything fell into place and it worked big time.
