What role are you playing in ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’?
I am playing a DJ, 32 years of age, slightly old for his profession. He loves Trisha, a Jat girl from Delhi who is doing better than him in life. They’ve been going around for three years and then she asks him to get married to her. He freezes, is confused when he is confronted with the marriage question. It’s a very funny film and very well cast. Even the actors in smaller roles like Aamir Bashir, Tarana who plays my sister, Suchitra…It was a very well knit unit…Very witty.
How is Mallika Sherawat to work with?
She is hard working, collaborates to make the scenes to look better, has a good comic timing, she is faultless. After this film her career will take a different direction.
What is Rahul Bose doing in a film starring Mallika Sherawat?
Every three four years I am asked questions why I am doing what I am doing. As an actor you can’t play a lighthearted character in an Art House movie. I do one film at a time. Now, it can be a ‘Jahnkaar Beats’, I can do a Romantic comedy like ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’, I’ve also done a ‘Thakshak’ that was once again a very different role from what I had been associated with earlier. As an actor you have to make choices. And if a good script has Mallika Sherawat, then why not.
What is the kind of cinema Rahul Bose likes to watch?
Very Art House Cinema…something that has nothing to do with formula. Makers like Satyajit Ray, Latin American films, not the mainstream. I don’t think Hollywood is the yardstick for good cinema. Some of the most boring and substandard cinema is produced by Hollywood. It’s got little originality, doesn’t respect the viewer. Their best is just about ok.
Who are your favourite actors?
Balraj Sahni, Seema Biswas, Sean Penn and Sanjeev Kumar.
Could you name a film that really appealed to you in the recent past?
‘Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi’
You do a lot of social work especially your work in Andaman And Nicobar Islands for the rehabilitation of Tsunami victims is praiseworthy…
I am selfish as social work makes me very happy. It’s a very private thing for me. I take my role as an activist seriously. I am all for education for the girl child. One must listen to one’s soul and go ahead and do what one feels is right.
How about a directing a film again…’Everybody Says I am Fine’ was received well…
I am writing a screenplay. We shall be starting work on it this March. I love my Art. I really believe cinema is something that I cherish and love so much. I believe cinema should be artistic. It’s too wonderful a media to be taken casually.
Doing dare bare scenes in ‘Split Wide Open’ and the masturbating scene in ‘The English August’….Was it really artistic…?
You can’t have sex with your clothes on…
What about your love life…There’s hardly anything spicy written about you these days…
I haven’t had a love life for the last five years. My love life is non existent. There are other things that keep me occupied and happy.
What makes you happy?
Whatever makes you happy. I like to give lectures on various subjects, I am working for gender equality, I write a monthly column in ‘The Hindustan Times’.
