“Marriage Is Such a Beautiful Institution,” says Nagma

    [Interview by Faridoon Shahryar]
    Wednesday, September 20, 2006
“Marriage is such a beautiful institution. It’s the union of two people. And considering I am in the Film industry, I have to be that much more careful in choosing my happiness,” says actress Nagma who has had a super successful stint down South and now she has emerged as the superstar of the fast emerging Bhojpuri cinema. Having started her career with Salman Khan in the musical ‘Baaghi’ way back in 1990, Nagma has come a long way after having acted opposite superstars like Salman Khan, Chiranjeevi, Rajnikanth and now with the reigning superstar of Bhojpuri films Ravi Kishen and Manoj Tiwari. She is also playing the title role of ‘Ganga’ in a Bhojpuri film which also boasts of Amitabh Bachchan in the cast. Over to an IndiaGlitz exclusive with the actress who wants to keep on working for as long as she can:

You have become a superstar in Bhojpuri films in a very short span of time

I am happy that I have managed to become the foundation of Bhojpuri films. When I did the first Bhojpuri films, I was not aware that I’d be doing any more films. I’ve worked in nine languages and I was not aware that what I would do next. I got an offer from Dilip (Kumar) sahab, then Saroj ji offered me a film, then Tinu Verma asked me to do a film and then there’s ‘Ganga’ with Amitabh Bachchan. When such scripts coming from such renowned people came my way I couldn’t say no.

Some people call you the Madhuri Dixit of Bhojpuri cinema

I don’t want to be Madhuri Dixit, I don’t want to be Sridevi either. I feel that I should make a mark for myself the way I created a niche for myself in South. I am enjoying myself. Bhojpuri cinema is new and it is emerging in a big way. The volume of people watching these films is huge. Yesterday we had the music launch of ‘Raja Thakur’ where Shatru ji is there as well. Ajay ji has already worked in Bhojpuri films, Sunny ji may be doing a film too.

You are playing ‘Ganga’ in a film starring Amitabh Bachchan

This role is truly special for me. It’s an honour to get the title of ‘Ganga’ in UP-Bihar considering its sacredness.

You have given super hit films in South with superstars like Rajnikanth and Chiranjeevi….

I have worked in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. I have worked with all the superstars and it was great.

Why are you not doing any South Indian projects any more?

Because I had done so many that no variety left for me. If there is an out of the way role which is very different to films that I have done so far then I’d want to do it.

Could you name a few of your favourite films?

There are so many. In Telugu I like ‘Mugguru Monagallu’ with Chiranjeevi. Then in Tamil I like ‘Badsha’ with Rajnikanth. Then I like a film called ‘Kadhalan’ with Prabhudeva.

There have been reports about your romantic relations with Superstar of Bhojpuri films Ravi Kishen

In the Bhojpuri films there are only two superstars that is Ravi Kishen ji and Manoj Tiwari ji. Since my first film with Ravi ji was such a big hit that obviously all the offers came with Ravi ji. I have done three films with Manoj Ji, like I am there with him in ‘Raja Thakur’, then there’s ‘Ganga’ and even ‘Prem Yudh’ he is there. But since those films haven’t been released such things are being said.

    What about your marriage plans?

I don’t know. I personally feel I should work life long. Juhi ji is working, Kajol is working. But it depends on whom I marry, circumstances like when the kids happen…Whatever….Break for some time…I want to keep on working.

    When will you marry?

When I find a good match. Marriage is such a beautiful institution. It’s the union of two people. And considering I am in the Film industry, I have to be that much more careful in choosing my happiness.

    Any Regrets?

I had been offered the role that was later done by Ayesha Jhulka opposite Aamir Khan in ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’. Maybe that is one of my regrets.
