“Right Place At The Right Time,” says Kangana Ranaut

    [Interview by Faridoon Shahryar]
    Monday, September 25, 2006
“It’s all about being at the right place at the right time,” says seductively cerebral actress Kangana Ranaut who made a smashing debut with Anurag Basu’s ‘Gangster’ early this year. Within a span of few months she has several big films up her sleave like ‘Metro’, Suneel Darshan’s ‘Shakalaka…’ but the film that she is most excited about is Mohit Suri’s ‘Woh Lamhe’ where she is enacting the reel version of actress of yesteryears Parveen Babi. It is a complex role as it delineates upon Babi’s relationship with director Mahesh Bhatt and how she slipped into Schizophrenia. IndiaGlitz caught up with the talented actress before the release of the film and found out why she doesn’t want to do a ‘Chandramukhi’, ‘Paro’ or ‘Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam’.

Something about your role in the film…

In Woh Lame I am playing an actress. My name is Sana Azim. I am a big star and I fall in love with a struggling director, played by Shiney Ahuja. This film is inspired by very big actress of Hindi films Parveen Babi and Bhatt sahab’s love story with her. I am playing Parveen Babi.

What kind of research did you do for your role?

No. I didn’t have to do much research. When I got the script and when Mr Bhatt gave me the narration, Bhatt sahab was always there to clear my confusion. Research was done by the writer of the film Shagufta ji, Mohit, our director…For almost a year. And when I got the script there wasn’t much to research for me.

Were there any pressures playing a complex character?

Yes, it is a very responsible thing. It is not a normal role. And at this stage of my career, Bhatt sahab, Mukesh ji, Mohit believed in me even though ‘Gangster’ hadn’t even been released. I wanted to live up to their expectations. I didn’t want them to feel like a fool. I really feel responsible.

Your impressions about the music of the film….

Music is very beautiful. Again, music given by Pritam ji. He also gave music in ‘Gangster’. So, it’s a hit pairing. Very nice music and very good response also.

You are not a trained actress, what makes you comptent?

It’s all about being at the right place at the right time. Otherwise there are much more talented and beautiful actresses. Their acting careers end but still they don’t get roles their worth. On the other hand there are fools like me who has just entered the industry and roles are pouring in. So, I am just plain lucky.

    What is your dream role?

I really don’t feel excited about roles already done before. For e.g Chandramukhi, Paro…They are great roles and I may have liked doing it when they happened for the first time. But something which has already happened then that impression will come in my performance. Like if I do ‘Sahib Bibi Ghulam’ then I would do exactly like that. And I don’t think I am to be blamed for it. I want to do something new, some character that can be given a new shape by me…Those are things that excite me as an actress.
