“It’s Wonderful to Be Remembered,” says Boman Irani

    [Interview by Faridoon Shahryar]
    Saturday, October 14, 2006
He calls himself a character actor but with superlative performances enhancing box office fate of recent movies like ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ and ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ Boman Irani is hot property in the Bollywood Business. He is all excited about playing DCP De Silva’s character immortalized by Iftiqar sahab in Chandra Barot’s ‘Don’ in Farhan Akhtar’s remake. IndiaGlitz gets up-close-n-personal in an exclusive interview with Boman Irani as he talks about what makes SRK the fabulous person that he is and why the serious actor in him wants to be recognized by the audience as well.

How is it like playing Iftiqar in the Don remake?

I was always fond of the man and the actor. There was always something dignified about him. It’s a pleasure because when you are young and watching this movie and looking with big eyes at a film which you were so much in love with. It’s a cult film. Today, I have an opportunity to actually act in it. It’s a wonderful experience.

Iftiqar was much older than what you are…

I am much older than what you think I am.

    But you look much younger.

(laughs) Ok…Today cops get promoted faster than what they were in 1978. It doesn’t matter if one is older or younger. The essence of the character is more important.

Your look in the film is looking stylish…It’s an important character in the film…

Thank you … (laughs again)…I think it’s a very important character in the film. There was a kind of father figure Iftiqar sahab played with Mr Bachchan. In this case, it’s very very professional. The whole film is very stylish, very slick…Great detailing has gone into what one is wearing in which scene…It’s a film that hits you with its style….And of course content because content can not be substituted by style. But at the same time it’s important to make it look wonderful. Fans today want their stars like Shahrukh, Priyanka, Isha, Kareena Arjun to look good and all of them look so gorgeous. Apart from that film itself looks fabulous. That’s important. You don’t want a scrappy looking film these days.

‘Veer Zaara’, ‘Main Hoon Na’….You’ve starred with SRK before but this is the first time you are playing a pivotal role with him…

Somehow it was nice that I had done ‘Veer Zara’ and ‘Main Hoon Na’ because we got to know each other. It was not a cold meeting when we first met for a pivotal role like this. It was a great warm up to this. Another great thing that helps very much in interaction with actors is shooting on location, especially when you are shooting abroad in a foreign country for ninety days, sleeping in the same hotel on the same floor or on the floor above. It becomes home. I hate to say this but the hotel does become home. It becomes home simply because you have your co-stars as your neighbours. When you pack-up all of you are going together to the same house. All leaving together in the morning. It’s a wonderful feeling to work with Shahrukh Khan is that it’s an absolute joy. I have to say this and I am not saying because I am supposed to say this in an interview and it’s the right thing to say. But he is somehow so concerned with everybody in the unit. He is paying attention to everybody. He is naughty with a wry sense of humour. He can tease me a lot, I tease him back. We had loads of fun.

You’ve had lots of experience in theatre….And your first film that got you acclaim was a serious film ‘Let’s Talk’…Then ‘Munnabhai’ happened and you got into a comic image…Here in ‘Don’ once again you are playing a serious character…

I don’t entirely agree. There have been several films where I have played serious roles like ‘Veer Zara’, ‘Lakshya’, ‘My Wife’s Murder’, ‘Let’s Talk’ then there was a film called ‘Kal’ that didn’t do well. I am playing a serious role in ‘Eklavya’ as well. Now, ‘Don’ is a serious role. What is remembered most is what people want to remember and that is ‘Munnabhai’….It’s a wonderful thing to be remembered. As an actor in theatre, I had only done serious roles. I am used to doing serious roles. It is your job to convince the audience that you are playing that character. An actor’s job is to play all sorts of roles, especially a character actor.

‘Jaaneman’ is releasing the same day as ‘Don’ any butterflies….Hype is immense around both the films…

I normally get butterflies in the stomach before the first screening and that has already happened. So, my butterflies have flown away and they are doing well for themselves wherever they are. At this moment I am not so nervous. The film looks very good, seems very promising…It will get a great opening and on the strength of its merit it will do well. It’s quite a roller coaster of a ride. I enjoyed it very much, my family enjoyed it and I see no reason why my extended family…that is the audience would like it as well.

‘Don’ is going to have a massive release overseas…

That’s probably because I am in it…..No sorry (laughs). Well all I can say is that fans abroad are huge huge support of our movies, especially Shahrukh Khan. They love him desperately. There is something about the man which I can’t explain, maybe a fan can explain. It is such a wonderful experience working with him. And after working with him I can understand why it is such a wonderful experience it is for the fans to watch him.
