VJ, anchor, standup comedian and a movie actor! What do you personally feel you are best at?
[Smiles] I try to do my best in whatever job I do. Also, if you look at it, all these jobs are not very far from each other.
You are being diplomatic!
No, that’s not the case. In fact it has been quite comfortable doing all of this. My production and direction background also helps since not many know that I was also directing for TV before I became a VJ. Apart from all of this, I was also producing for Channel V. All this exposure helps.
It appears you have been working for long.
Yes, I have been! It has been 11-12 years since I started working at an age of 21.
Doesn’t it become hectic to manage so much on the platter?
I won’t say it becomes hectic. Moreover I have had my share of twiddling my thumbs while sitting idle at home. If I have to choose between the two, I prefer being busy [laughs].
You seem to be sharing a special bond with Rajat Kapoor after ‘Mixed Doubles’. One hears you are also working in his next, ‘Mithya’.
That’s right; he is the only guy at the moment who trusts me completely as a lead actor for his films. I know Rajat well and that helps me. He has a team that pushes me to deliver my best.
A title like ‘Mithya’ gives an impression of the film being somewhat deep?
I won’t say it is deep; it is a very dangerous word to use [laughs]. I would say it is a little dark. While ‘Mixed Doubles’ was lighter, ‘Mithya’ becomes a lot darker, more so in the second half. Also personally, I prefer darker movies.
Is that the criterion which makes you pick between art and commercial films?
I really don’t see my work as being art or commercial. Also that line has more or less diminished today. Knowing Rajat as a director, I know how he will present the subject and make it reachable to the audience.
Who else form the cast of this film?
It is a much bigger film that ‘Mixed Doubles’. In fact you could call it twice if it. There is Naseeruddin Shah, Neha Dhupia, Harsh Chhaya, Saurabh Shukla and Vinay Pathak.
That reminds one of your ‘jodi’ with Vinay Pathak. It seems to be undefeatable!
Ya, we both truly enjoying working with each other, be it theatre, TV, films or commercials. We have been good friends over the years, much before we became a pair on the television and films circuit. We both met at work and we also did some shows at Channel V. These shows gave the two of us an identity that we have nurtured over the years. I am so glad that we are together as we both share a healthy relationship with each other. As actors, we both understand how to play our characters without trying to eat into each other’s role.
