Sonam - "I am excited about 'Mausam' and 'Players'"

    [Interview by Joginder Tuteja]
    Saturday, April 30, 2011
Going slow but steady in her choice of films and the volume that she is handling in one go, Sonam Kapoor now has an exciting year ahead with ''Mausam'' arriving this summer and ''Players'' hitting the screen later this year or early 2012. With some promising times ahead, Sonam is happy looking forward to what life has in store for her. In a conversation with Joginder Tuteja, Sonam talks about interesting times ahead, responds on the oft repeated accusation around what made her sign ''Thank You'' in the first place and how she has eventually gained from the film by winning a protective co-star for herself in the form of Akshay Kumar.

First 'Thank You' and now 'Mausam' followed by 'Players' - some exciting times ahead for you Sonam?

True, this is turning out to be an interesting year for sure. I want to have a lot of fun and do films that I really want to. I always wanted to be in a position where I can do right things at my own will. Thankfully, I am there now.

Well, in the position that you are in, one would have expected you to be seen in more solo starrers. Many have wondered how you consented to wotk in a multi starrer like 'Thank You' where you had Rimi Sen and Celina Jaitly for company. Now that the f

(Says immediately) No, not at all. If you see the film, it's basic plotline was centred on me. Also I loved the fact that the girl I was playing was so innocent. Despite her character being so young, she fought for what she deserved from her husband (Bobby Deol). She understood the values of what an Indian wife should be. I think 'Thank You' was a very progressive film as each of the three women was given such a huge position of power.

I guess in building strong professional relationships, you did progress further by gaining a protective senior co-actor in the form of Akshay Kumar. I have heard stories about how he took care of you since you were the youngest cast member around.

I have worked with Akshay for the first time in my career. He was always so super nice to me. Those who have worked with him tell me that he restricts himself to professional conversations with his co-stars and otherwise keeps his distance. However with me he was so sweet and I realised that the very first time I met him. He was so kind to me and I immediately felt very comfortable with him.

Seemingly he also turned into your mentor today, right?

(Says fondly) He constantly used to tell me that I was so fragile. He also warned me for shooting my mouth off. Though I feel that I know the world, he used to tell me that it was far from being true as I was still growing up. Once when I said something, he commented - 'Tujhe pata nahi hai yeh duniya kaisi hai, tu kahin bhi kuch bhi bol deti hai'. Yes, he has been very protective about me.
