First of all congratulations for your first entry into the dream land of tinsel town
Thank u so much
Belonging to a family of actors and directors, was your father David Dhawan's success the motivation to wear the director's cap?
Direction was a natural drift, not because my father is a successful director, it's because my inclination towards directing came in the very early days of my life. People have preferences in what they want to do either a 9 to 5 job in a bank or being a teacher or actor, direction was my pick and I enjoy begin on sets and directing. I believe one should be enjoying in whatever he/she is doing to make life run smoothly and am following my passion.
When was the first time you realized that you have a passion for direction?
As I said, very early days of my life while watching dad working on the sets. Observing him, it didn't took time and I didn’t waited for dad commercial success… It just came in…
Saw the raw footage of the promo… Looks interesting, how u describe your Desi Boyz? Is it an out and out comedy?
Desi Boyz is an entertaining film, the promos which will be seen in theatres today after the final edit speaks about the power of entertainment in the movie. Its has lot of things then humour, it has romance, drama, relationships, father-son relationships, father-daughter relationships, mother-son relationships, friendship, bonding between Akshay and John which is most important. All things have been taken care to cater all.
John and Akshay are coming together after the successful Garam Masala, what mischief and naughtiness they do in Desi Boyz?
First of all I will clear the myth that Akshay and John play pole dancers in the film. You just saw the raw footage, where are the poles...? Yes they do indulge in some risky business for money due to unemployment and then face problems that's what the story all about...
What's sort of risky business Akshay and John do in the film to find themselves in trouble?
That I will disclose slowly, let the time come... (Smiles) Right now people will see the trailer where Akshay knocks on the door with Sanjay Dutt giving the voiceover… Let the door open and the cats will come out from the hat.
How the idea of Desi Boyz came into your mind?
There were reference points like relationships between two friends but I wanted to give something relevant and strong. So it took lot of time in writing for Desi Boyz based on the idea of friendships and relationships.
Watching your father David Dhawan on the sets, how much will be the influence of your father style of filmmaking seen in Desi Boyz?
Well the audience will feel the David Dhawan brand while watching the film but I have tried to give the film as much individuality of mine as I can. If I make an action film, or a serious cinema or a horror then people won't say it's a David Dhawan kind of film. But whenever I will make a happy film the reference might come to some minds, as David Dhawan film is associated with entertainment and happiness. Desi Boyz is my type of entertainment.
What's your type of entertainment?
It's a feel good film with varied emotions and the humour. Over here is subtle, softer more situational than the regular humour seen in Bollywood.
So there's no Buffoonery, slapstick stuff in Desi Boyz?
Yeah there's no high energy over the top thingies happening here. No slapping, tearing of hairs and all those stuffs. Its very difficult to make people laugh by the way Bollywood does, but my humour in Desi Boyz is more subtle though not softer but natural.
Any formal training in filmmaking?
Yes I have done major s from film training school in New York.
How easy or difficult was it for you to direct well established names like Akshay, John, Deepika, Chitrangda in your debut film?
It was easy and I should say I am lucky to have such professional people working with me in my debut film. Akshay, John, Deepika, Chitrangda all where co-operative, I faced no difficulties.
Star tantrums, interference?
Since everything has gone well, do you to think today that you could have done better as a director than what you have done?
Oh yes many time I feel that this particular scene could have been done much better in that way... These thoughts come naturally.... I have tried to do my best let's see how the audience reacts.
What's your father Davidji's reaction?
He has liked it, though he still needs to see the entire final product but he has liked the elements and the way the shots have been taken. His entertainment standards are very high and the final comment will come only when he sees the film completely.
Your admiration in Bollywood as a filmmaker
Raju Hirani and Farhan Akhtar I admire their work and one day will definitely want to make mark of my own as a filmmaker.
Grown on watching English films… The recent 'Social Networking' and 'Krammer v/s Krammer' are the one which has a special place as they are on friendship and relationships.
How eager are you to know the audience response?
I'm very eager and quite excited to know how the audience has reacted to my take on friendship and relationship in Desi Boyz. I'll closely watch the reactions which will guide me where I have to do changes and where I have to maintain the quality, when I do my next....
All the very best
