I will never fool my audience - Habib Faisal

    [Interview by Vishal Verma]
    Sunday, August 05, 2012
Like all filmmakers cinema is his bread pakoda but Habib dips it with the tea of reality... After winning major acclaims for ''''Do Dooni Chaar'''' Habib is coming up with some raw attitude with ''''Ishaqzaade'''' produced under India’s premier production house Yash Raj banner, the movie stars Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor who is making his debut in this film. In a brief encounter Habib speaks on his vision of cinema, the importance of marketing and of course ''''Ishaqzaade''''.

    Attitude 'Ishaqzaade' wears

Ishaqzaade explores the attitude of small town youth who are now not allured by the glitz glamour and the arch lights of opportunities a big city offers. Previously the young legs where attracted but now they know that the same metro city; be it Delhi or Mumbai, is under the burden of demanding infrastructure... The big city is struggling to get fresh breeze as its getting chocked in traffic jams.

In Ishaqzaade the youth of India's small towns like Indore, Ambala, Ratlam, Lucknow, Bhopal, etc is seeing developments around his environment and the slogan of going to big cities is becoming passe; the small town youth wanna grow in their home town… All this is explored through a love story...

    How the idea cropped up?

An idea is a process of what we see, listen, hear, read things which happen around us combined by our experiences, believe and thoughts all these germs keeps on collecting in our bank of sense and one fine day one of them pops up giving birth to a script.

How aggressive, raw, furious and violent is 'Ishaqzaade'

Ishaqzaade is an anti violence film... We are not showing violence to sell the film and any sensationalism or show any heroism in holding a gun. Ishaqzaade talks about peace, love, friendship and to show the repercussions of violence, violence needs to be shown then only its destruction and danger can be understood and highlighted. The characters through which the story unfolds bare raw attitude but the Ishaqzaade does not worship violence.

The setting, the lingo, the dialect

It's a fictitious city called 'Almor' which you can find in any Hindi speaking belt of India. Initially I thought of filming it in Sahanpur or Bijnor but later I realized that it's a story of a small town with the same and happenings, feelings and sentiments which can be find in any small town across India.

How easy or difficult was it for you to work with an exceptional talent like Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh before and with new comers like Parineeeti and Arjun over here?

The script the character needs to be explained to the actor; be it a season actor like Rishi or newcomers like Arjun or Parineeti. When Rishi Kapoor played Santosh Duggal in Do Dooni Chaar he didn’t know how will he return to his home in Delhi tired in the evening and how will he keep his bag on the top of the fridge. He was told.

Parineeti and Arjun are newcomers so it became relatively easier. I took them to Lucknow, Barabanki, and showed them how their character will behave. We observed the youth and their mood over there understood and studied their environment and the characters behavior pattern.

You are a dedicated and a brilliant filmmaker... 'Do Dooni Chaar' has proved it.. What is the reason for the B.O. failure of superior and distinguish cinema like “Do Dooni Chaar'?

In my opinion marketing plays a key role. I made a commercial film like Do Dooni Char starring Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh.. I didn’t make it keeping entirely film festivals in mind. A good product will run provided a proper awareness is created regarding its existence. If Do Dooni Chaar had been marketed properly, perhaps it would have attracted more audience...

A good movie will find its audience any way... Do Dooni Chaar is repeatedly getting telecast on channels and are people are loving it...

So in your opinion does the important aspect of marketing has been taken care by the producers and promoters of Ishaqzaade...

Aditya Chopra and YRF are passionate about their product and they want the awareness to reach to the maximum before the movie hits the screen. That's the passion of a filmmaker as a movie is just not a creative piece of art it's a product and it needs to be sold...

Any creative push and pull to ensure B.O. success?

Absolutely nothing as such. Yash Raj is a banner which caters to all genres without compromising on the product. Aditya has Vijay Krishna Acharya for Dhoom 3, Kabir Khan for New York and Ek Tha Tiger, Shimit Amin for Chake De India… All these movies are not those so called typical YRF products. But Chake de, Dhoom, New York have done well. Where was the compromise.. Just because a mainstream banner like Yash Raj is doing a movie it will fall prey to B.O. Compromises, I don't think so.. To the best of my knowledge Yash Raj doesn't believe in compromise...

Do Dooni to Ishaqzaade what's the next level for Habib Faisal?

Depends how 'Ishaqzaade' performs at the B.O... well... The level as a filmmaker will be the same.

    What genre will you explore?

Anything from sci fiction, thrillers to fast bed room comedies anything… But one thing is sure.. As a filmmaker whatever I do.. I will never fool my audience...
