De Taali - Simply an average Album
IndiaGlitz  [Monday, May 26, 2008]

After the poor compositions of’ Bhootnath’ and the roaring beats of ‘Tashan’ , the duo of Vishal-Shekar return with music for yet another comedy film since ‘Golmaal’. The movie combines Reitesh Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani which raises the musical expectations even further since ‘Masti’ provided some great music. The album is even more special as Vishal Dadlani steps in as lyricist for the album.

The album opens to the vivacious beats of ‘Everybody put your hands together’ a thumping, foot tapping number. Though the track brings together the likes of Sunidhi Chauhan, Anushka Manchanda and Shaan , it fails to impress as the combination of Hindi-English with some western beats has been very much done to death by most composers these days and specially Vishal-Shekar.

With the 2nd track of the album entitled ‘De Taali’ you just tend to wonder whether every song in the album will carry the title as part of the lyrics. Abbas Tyrewala steps in as a guest lyricist on this number and fails tremendously. Crooned by Sunidhi Chauhan and Shaan , this one too sounds raw. Abbas tries some gigs with the rhyme scheme with words like ‘Dining, Shining’ etc but ultimately at the cost of sounding cool, the track falls flat.

‘Aaj mein boond hoon’ comes in as the saving grace for the album. The romantically orchestrated number by Shreya Ghoshal wins you over the very first time you lend your ears. Shekar Ravjiani steps off the music director’s shoes and lends his voice too for the number but ultimately it Shreya’s voice that mesmerizes you.

‘Hone Lagi ‘tries to recreate the R.D.Burman 80’s feel and does a decent job. Anushka  Manchanda who has been coarse and loud with the title track of ‘Golmaal’ attempts something on the softer note. Shekar Ravjiani too lends his bit. The voices are impressive but the track isn’t the finest around. The remix version may find its way easily to a pub, lounge or disco around you but it is due promotion that this track requires.

Raja Hasan, the 1st runner up on the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge makes his mark with one of the finest tracks of the album. ‘Maari Teetri’ brings in the pumping Rajasthani folksy beats and is indeed foot tapping. Raja’s voice further enhances Vishal-Shekar’s composition. The track is sure to set the movie sailing across.

‘Tooti Phooti’ comes in as a cute , emotionally bonding track. The song crooned by Shaan , KK and Sunidhi Chauhan is absolutely fresh and calls for repeat hearing. A little bit of promotion is sure to do wonders for this track and eventually the film.

‘De Taali’ doesn’t bring Vishal –Shekar at their best since the tremendous success of ‘Om Shanti Om’ last year and sums up to being just an average.  With tracks such as ‘Aaj mein boond hoon’ and the rollicking ‘Maari Teetri’ , the album provides decent support to the film.

Rating : **1/2
