Film maker Suneel Darshan has been known for making films that are soaked in Indian heritage, culture and emotions. Even though most of his films are set in urban India, they have a strong undercurrent of deep rooted Indian feel to them that have labeled him as a film maker who rarely breaches out to create something that touches upon contemporary India.
His forthcoming SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM may just about change it as the film promises to be as urban, as modern and as contemporary as it can. Shot primarily in Johannesburg with international music industry as it's backdrop, SLBB is young, hip and happening.
But no, the film is not a campus or a bubblegum romance as the title may suggest. Instead it is about a professional rivalry and how it takes different shades. There are all kind of rivalries amongst family members, friends or social circles. The one in SLBB takes place in the world of music, an industry which is quite competitive in itself. It is a rivalry about a man who is reining this world and another who is an aspiring performer and has it in him to reach the top.
Set in New York, SLBB is about a big music star AJ [Bobby Deol] who is a great artist and finds his way up there in a foreign land, something that is quite difficult to achieve. He has built up his stardom in a big way and knows the trick of how to maintain it, with whatsoever means possible. This is what gives an edge to this character.
He knows that with talent comes power and he makes full use of it while being aware about his abilities.
On the other hand Reggie [Upen Patel] is an upcoming artist who belongs to Jodhpur and believes in talent. Even he comes to the big city of NY and finds his way into mainstream. He too has his gray shades with his ambitions and aggression in the right place. He is a young modern boy and wants to be successful in his professional life.
And now, he wants to be as big as AJ.
But SLBB is not just about the male protagonists AJ and Reggie. It is also about Sheena [Celina Jaitley] and Ruhi [Kangana Ranaut].
Sheena is a PR professional who brings to fore an important role that media has to play in the entertainment industry. She is quite glamorous and confident with very interesting shades to her. She is someone who is quite helpful, supportive, and very human at heart and yet has an element of negativity to her. She spots Reggie in an underground pub and sees potential in him. Soon she takes him under her wings and goes all out to help him find a foothold in the industry.
But soon, she would find herself taking away the very same foothold away from him!
Ruhi is an aspiring singer who is young but not naïve. She adores AJ for his talent, knowledge and success. She loves Reggie for his simplicity and charm. She is intelligent, world wise and confident about herself.
How she propels her way up in the ladder in the light of adverse circumstances is what brings the spice in her character.
A war begins, and an entertaining one for sure. The stage is set which is not too dramatic but interesting nevertheless. There are gray shades to one and all and a fight does happen. But no, it is not a fight between the have and the have not or black and white. It is a fight of a different kind.
A fight which comes due to ambition, manipulation and desperation. A fight that involves each of the four lead protagonists in which they unwittingly find themselves involved.
A fight that comes due to competition.
A fight that will have only winner - MUSIC!
With chartbuster music by Himesh Reshammiya promising to move up in the ladder with every passing week, SLBB is an entertaining popcorn ci
