What is it all about

Yash Raj Films youth wing Y films does a bhangra rap making all the fathers and sons to clap.. the third release of Y Films is nicely cooked chicken tandoori in all Punjabi glory.

After the not so happening previous outing at the metro pizza joint in Mujhse Fraandship Karoge, papa YRF asks first timer Ashima Chibber to stick to its strong desi roots of Punjabiyat and weddings for Y Films Mere Dad Ki Maruti for some paratha entertainment with butters of fun, mirch and aachars of peppy and tangy joy ride adding some lassi of bap beta emotions in the end for a niece fillings of entertainment for those stomachs who opt for mast masala fun.

The Story

The writers Neeraj Udwani, Pooja Desai and Ashima Chibber simply ignore any innovations for this bap beta story and introduce us to a typical Punjabi family in Chandigarh where Dad (Ram Kapoor) is big fan of brand Maruti cars and has some emotional connect to Maruti gaddis. His daughter is about to get married and he wishes to gift his in law a brand new Maruti.. things take a ride of fun when his good for nothing son Sameer (Saqib Saleem) takes the car to impress the college hottie Jasleen (Rhea Chakraborty). Neeraj Udwani, Pooja Desai and Ashima Chibber takes care of the Punjabi lingo and keep the proceedings tight, colorful, loud and clear. They also manage to get away with some weirdo moments like the dance of the sister during the sangeet.. special appearance of the parrot and the shit.

What to look out for

Ashima Chibber loud, clear and colourful debut as a director who makes this over the top entertainer with ease.. the writers Neeraj Udwani, Pooja Desai help the cause by establishing the characters for the immediate connect with the target audience. The execution is simple, direct and to the point. No kiddings.

The situations have resemblance to reality where you have father and son not in sync with each other feelings but the caring and concern is always there. The scenes between father and son are fantastically written especially Ram Kapoor gets the best lines to deliver.

Music is a highlight Sachin Gupta has done a great job in making the viewer get intoxicated with the Punjabi wine in its music.. its peppy. 'Punjabiyan Di Battery' is the best which stays on even when you leave the theatre.

Technicalities are in sync. Adil Afsar does a god work from his camera. Antara Lahiri editing is crisp.

Coming to performance. The bapp beta Jodi is simply awesome.

Ram Kapoor stands out as the over the top screaming Punjabi father form Chandigarh. He is just brilliant. Ram Kapoor uses his body language to such great effect and gives a spectacular performance..

Saqib Saleem is a first grade. He showed his potential in Mujhse Fraandship Karoge and here he goes beyond. Great timings blended with some mannerisms. Excellent.

Rhea Chakraborty is fine. Prabal Panjabi the friend is cute and lovely. Ravi Kissen is really good. Benazir Shaikh (sister) does a fair job.

What not

The plot fails to stop  it self from  falling prey to predictability, guilty of not trying something new and following the tried and tested route of feel good family film involving wedding and north Indian taste. Why Maruti only.. Why not fiat Padmini, Mahindra, Ambassador etc.

Conclusion: All said and done. Mere Dad Ki Maruti is a laughing, dancing, feel good fun. Enjoy.
