Doyen Nagarathnamma Departs

The doyen of theatre and actress of over 15 films in the yesteryears R Nagarathanamma breated last on 6th of October at her residence at the age of 87 years. It is such a coincidence that R Nagarathanamma passed away a few days after another pillar of Kannada cinema - producer, distributor and exhibitor KCN Gowda left his journey on this earth at the same age.

She left behind one daughter and two sons and innumerable fans. The cremation took place at Harischandra Ghat in Srirampuram, Bangalore on Sunday afternoon. The topnotch in state ministry Suresh Kumar, Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs, Nataka Academy President Malathi Sudhir, Master Hirannaiah, Rajya Sabha member B Jayasri, former Nataka Academy President BV Rajaram and other visited the house of Nagarathnamma at Rajajinagara to play last respect.

Padmasri R Nagarathnamma entered the stage at the age of 12 and continued her innings for 75 years. In last January the Padmasri was bestowed on R Nagarathnamma by Government of India that was given by former President of India Pratibha Patil in the month of April 2012. Nagarathnamma performance was parallel to male actors on stage and cinema.

All Women Nataka Mandali R Nagarathnamma started way back in 1958 and the stage plays were played by all women. Nagarathnamma known for mythological plays was familiar for Bheema, Balarama, Kamsa, Ravana - power packed roles.

R Nagarathnamma got the highest Padmasri award, State Rajyotsava award, Central Sangeetha and Nataka Academy award, Gubbi Veeranna award are the highest awards at the state level.
