You have surpassed a long career so far in films...
That's because of my mentor Sri Puttanna Kanagal. In my debut as hero in 'Nagarahavu' in 1972 I was taught the basic behavior and that has come up in me.
What kept you going so strong in 33 years?
One should be disciplined. I am basically a director's actor. Follow the instructions properly. Keep fit for the shooting. Obey the elders be punctual are the essentials here in cinema. What the elders have followed we have to follow. Maintaining their glory and glitz is not possible for the young slots.
Why the national award is not coming your way?
Awards are bought today. Lobbying is taking place rampantly. When there is people award all these awards do not interest me. That's the reason I did not go to get the Film Fare award given to 'Aptha Mithra'. I lost the interest long ago. When 'Veerappanayaka' was sent for national award committee did not had the patience to open the box. It came back as it is with no remarks.
Why are you opting for remake films?
This remake is commented only in Karnataka. What's wrong? The preparation you make is taking lot of time. When books are translated from one language to another why not films yaar? Out of 100 films we make in Kannada only a few are remakes. The proved ones only interest the film producers. They see the safety first. When the Kannada filmdom is in the position of adjacent states the thought could have been given.
Still we in Karnataka boast of seven Jnanapeeth award winners, with many writers..
A guest is at your house. You don't have necessary grocery in the house. You borrow from the adjacent houses. Prepare the dish and feel happy on the hospitality. That is what happening. Look at my films like 'Yajamana', 'Sooryavamsha' and the recent 'Aptha Mithra'. It is all borrowed but made somewhere between 10 to 40 crores of business.
In 191 films you have done socio, mythological and historical. Is there anything left?
This 'want' is unlimited. I don't have aspiration. From the beginning I have got everything without asking. My theory is that one should not say 'NO' we should say 'Enough'. This is what I have learnt from my Guru Sri Bannanje Govindacharya. For getting and losing anything one should have 'Yoga' and 'Yogyathe' (fortune and worthiness).
Coming to the social service, have you taken up anything so far?
The service one does should not be publicized. I have taken up many which I am not interested in disclosing. My association with Vikram Hospital in Mysore is very much there.
You have said sometime back that the media should not write anything about remake films..
When we look at other language newspapers this culture is not there. When the media prepare that so and so is a remake a sort of aversion takes place. The maker, artistes and audience not worried about it. Then why only media! Everything happens in this world out of inspiration. We have only 40 subjects and we have to be in that boundary.
You know that the culture is borrowed we get cross culture functioning in our society?
No one make it absolutely frame to frame. The moustache and dhoti culture is there in Karnataka too. When it comes to comedy the good ones should be taken. There is nothing wrong.
You always say 'Success' just happens. A studious approach with the successful formula cannot ensure cash registers ringing?
No. Most of the formula films have failed. Success just happens. From the time immemorial no one has ensured success before going to the sets. Even the failure is also not permanent. Success and failure is like a circle.
You showed interest to go to theatre to stage some plays?
There are some people asking me to stage plays. But it requires lot of preparation and they should launch it in the right way.
