    Box office Badshah - Darshan.

    Tuesday, December 13, 2005
The dynamic hero Darshan has conquered the pivotal position in Kannada after a long struggle in his life. Son of veteran actor Toogudeepa Srinivas – Darshan was kept away from films by his father. But destiny drew him to films in the beginning of 90''''s. He joined the Ninasam theatre group. He started dreaming then. Today he is the winning horse. This has not come so easily for him.

Come let us talk to this tall actor who has grown heaps and bounds in four years as a hero of Kannada cinema. He spoke to this correspondent at Rejoyz Auditorium in Malleswaram Bangalore – after the press briefing of his new untitled film a remake of ''''Thirupachchi''''.

What went wrong for so many years in your life?

My father Toogudeepa Srinivas well acquainted with all the film activities a very big villain of Kannada cinema very close to Dr.Rajkumar family wanted me to carve a new career. But studies I could not cope up. I scored very less marks in SSLC in Mysore.

Perhaps the acting was in your blood….

That is true. I joined the Ninasam theatre group to learn the technical aspects of film making. I evinced interest in cinematography. As camera assistant I have worked for a few films. Then I was offered a small role in 'Mahabharatha' Kannada film by director S.Narayan. It was in 1993. That later brought me to this stage today.

How do you assess your growth today?

I am paying the income tax between Rs.5 to 6 lakhs every month. That is the financial growth. Temperament is concerned I am cool most of the time. When someone unnecessarily cajole me yell at me I will not leave.

How do you look at the heroines?

I talk to them very clearly in the beginning that you will get Good Morning from me and nothing else. I would not be available to tell you even Good evening. I have maintained it so far. None of my heroine knows my mobile phone number.

    You are averse to girls?

Not like that. While working on the sets I have to be close to them. But off the sets I am totally unaware of them. You can ask Rakshita who has asked with me in four films whether she knows my mobile number or not.

You had the courage to say I love you to……..

I said this to my wife 8 years ago in one of the functions. She was my relative also. But we were in love for long time. She was in the third semester of Chemical Engineering when I got married to her. I asked her to continue the education of remaining semesters after marriage.

There is a complaint that you have not taken your wife to honeymoon?

At that time I was busy in my work. I did not concentrate on my personal life. Later when I met with an accident – my left shoulder displaced I went to Singapore for 15 days with her. Now in the next year I am planning for Europe trip. I have already told her about it.

What about Darshan as an actor. What is the growth?

By going to sets with my father, from doing small roles I got an offer from producer Rammurthy to play lead in 'Majestic'. That was an action film gave a breakthrough for my life. I have tried out at many of the roles so far and increasing my strength not only in muscle power on the screen.

You were in the camera department also. So you know the tricks of it…

My friend who is cameraman cum producer today Anaji Nagaraj tells me that even in action scenes I give the perfect landing.

It seems you have given free call sheet to long time friend Anaji Nagaraj?

It is not a free call sheet. After 'Shastri' became hit he came to me with a gunny bag full of money and put it before me and said this is my money. I bought a farm from that money. I would give one call sheet in the beginning of every year to my friend Anaji Nagaraj.

You had a good innings in 2005?

Yes. Ayya, Shastri are super hit Swami was average hit. Saradara was a flop. There are chances of 'Mandya' releasing on 30th December 2005 .

When your film fail do you sit at home and analyze?

I learnt lessons from 'Namma Preethiya Raamu' and 'Saradara'. I should not bog down but give back. The audiences who come to theatre are not interested in messages and lecturers. They come to forget themselves from their tension. We should not add insult to their injuries.

Is it true that you are the first artiste to pay fine to film chamber?

That time I was doing three films. All the three producers complained that I am not available to them. For no mistake of mine the Film chamber charged Rs.25000 fine. When my problem was there for payment the Film Chamber did not comeforward.

Which film you rate as your best so far?

I would say 'Ayya' has all the shades. That is my best film.

What are you up to for the 25th film?

My brother Dinakar who is already in direction department will be directing me in my 25th film. I have completed so far 21 films as hero and by next year middle I will be giving my call sheet for him. The producer of that film will be my best friend Anaji Nagaraj.

Darshanji there is a complaint against you that you do not accept invitations for functions?

I do not sometime accept it. For me to accept the invitation they have to give certain amount to a needy organization. Only after I get call from such needy organization I attend to such function. This practice I have started doing when I came to know that organizers of any function rise money from our name.

What is the reason to take this decision?

There are so many artistes today need help. I know when my father was bedridden actress like Vinayaprasad came and gave Rs.5000 as medical aid. In my purse I have written all those who helped for my father's medical aid. I am ready to give call sheet for all of them. The recent case is of Renukaprasad the supporting actor. In one of my shooting all the technical team came forward to give their "bata" for one day to Renukaprasad medical aid. It came to Rs.22000. I added Rs.28000 and we handed over the money to his medical expenses.

What do you when fans come and ask for money?

They have never done it like that. They say they are doing so and so social work. I give 50 percent of whatever they intend to donate for the needy.

Darshan how long you want to continue in this run of the mill action films?

As long as the demand is there I am going to accept it. I have a few comedy films like Suntaragali, Datta and Mandya lined up.

What are the other offers on hand?

I am playing the lead in 'Thirupachchi' remake. I have two others on hand and it will start by March next year.

Is it true that you tried to keep the media away from you?

I told some of the media friends that they should not force me to take pictures on the sets. Firstly they did not come on one day without invitation. I got disturbed when the news photographer told me to hold the according to his taste. That became an issue. They said I don't like Journalists.

    What happened later?

It was set right. I told my producers when journalists are invited to the sets I should not be having any work to do. Most of the times what happens when media come to cover the assignments our assistants come and stand behind and say the shot ready is ready director is calling. Then you get disturbed. I have avoided all these in everyone's interest.

    What are your family plans?

Sometime next year I am expecting to become a father.

Are you worried because all heroes who worked with Ramya got female kid?

That may be true in the case of Upendra, Sudeep and Puneeth Rajkumar. I am planning about my family after the film 'Datta' with actress Ramya.
