Poornima's pointer to youths in 'Julie'

    Friday, March 10, 2006
Poornima Mohan ''Bahu of Bada Cinema House'' KCN banner - in Karnataka in her debut as director from ''Julie'' Kannada cinema has gathered very good hype. The disciplined approach and workaholic style are the trump cards for her to complete the film as on date. Poornima in the meantime is confused in the Kannada film circle as a heroine for her life style. From the elite class she looks very elegant with three kids (Swathi, Amoolya and Soorya) in her 16 years of married life. She is the fourth women director of Kannada filmdom. The lady director has arrived to give ever lasting impressions. She is taking up a straight subject film in her next venture.

Excerpts of an interview with Poornima Mohan:

The people are mistaken that you are also an actress?

I take it as a compliment. But right from my young age I have been keeping a good physique. I have my own life style.

There is a complaint that you don't have background in direction?

I do not agree to this comment. Comment should be fair. I have been closely observing the Kannada cinema industry from last 16 years after I got married to Mr Mohan. KCN banner is very prestigious house of film production in Karnataka. Besides production, we are in to distribution, exhibition and in over all cinema making there is expertise in this banner. I was observing all these developments from the beginning.

You say it was easy for you to take up direction?

I toiled for six months day and night to make pukka preparations. My husband disagreed initially. But he saw my commitment and involvement in the subject 'Julie'. It was cameraman Janardhan who had the subject rights.

What is that counts a lot in direction?

Self confidence is the top priority I give. My husband keeps on telling that if we make wrong moves we become a laughing stock. Such advices kept me cool in direction. Basically I am a stubborn. Till I finish any task I take up I would not leave it in the middle. I forego my sleep and food for completing my task.

You had a tough time while directing.

I made it easy sometimes by my proper homework. I was doing the cinema work all the 24 hours for six to eight months. Otherwise it is not possible to give a neat work.

The point is why did you take up a remake?

For the safety first I took up a remake. Secondly the subject of 'Julie' pregnancy before marriage is the issue of today. The strong message is tucked for such scenario is what moved me. Our banner may be very big in Karnataka but initially I thought I should be like this. When the search was going for subject after 'Vijayadashami' film from our banner this subject struck me.

Your banner had thought of any other scripts?

We thought of 'Bagbhan' of big B. But that did not materialize.

Have you seen the original of 'Julie'?

I have seen the Malayalam film 'Chattakari' several times. There is sentiment, family touch and female oriented elements in the film.

    Have you made some changes?

For the present generation there are some changes. For the bedroom song I did not go back. I stood by myself and stored the crucial song for the film with cameraman Janardhan's help.

Was it difficult for you to convince charming actress Ramya on this subject?

When I thought of this subject the first heroine who came to my mind is Ramya. She was selected for our 'Vijayadashami' film but she got the offer from 'Abhi' to act opposite Puneeth Rajkumar. When the offer was made again she jumped in joy and said we will do the film like 'Monsoon Wedding'.

How was the cooperation from some senior artistes for 'Julie'?

A veteran like Sihikahi Chandru said one thing after working in my direction, you call me for any role I would be there he said. Dino Morea stayed in a small hotel in Karwar and cooperated. We got support from Karwar police and public.

How was the day one direction for you?

First three days I felt it difficult to cope up. But from fourth day I adjusted and I got a feeling that I would do the direction. When confidence builds up the scope for creativity also increases. The last few reels are very touching for me. Ramya has also given a natural performance.

You faced any detractors in your debut direction?

The detractors will be there in every field. As the fourth women director of Kannada cinema I knew my responsibilities. Effort is the key word I believed. Those who had second thought now congratulated me after seeing the first copy.
