    Touch of gold

    Tuesday, April 04, 2006
Nappy and dexterous from film to film, complete faith and truthfulness in his work since the beginning has given the position of ''Touch of Gold'' for director S.Narayan in the commercial format of cinema making. Today all disciplined producer''s wants director Narayan. While Girish Kasaravalli bought laurels with Rajat Kamal awards at the national, director S.Narayan has seen to it every film has returned good results for his producer in the box office. He is called as the ''darling of producer''.

In a career of 31 films and 14 years five of his films have been silver jubilee and his ''Chandra Chakori'' has run successfully for 500 days in a theatre in Belgaum.

S.Narayan is a multifaceted personality - acting, lyrics, music, story, dialogues, screenplay, direction, producing and distribution he has done every department work with a touch of class.

Here is an encounter with this eminent director of Kannada cinema:

Congratulations on picking 8 folks songs for your film 'Sevanthi Sevanthi'?

I needed this type of media support. I wanted to give tribute to rich culture and heritage of Karnataka that is completing 50 years of formation of state. We have abundant of songs written by giants in the field of literature. The picking of 8 popular folk songs is a miniscule respect I am showing.

What are you up to as on today?

I am rewriting the script of 'Aa Nalaguru' for Dr.Vishnuvardhana. Highly respected producer Rockline Venkatesh is producing this film. This is a real story of everyone in life. This story is universally applicable. A man dies and he requires four persons to carry him. This is a touching subject and already made bumper in Andhra Pradesh. I am readjusting it to suit the Karnataka environment.

Are you not working on original scripts?

I have dozen ready with me. All of them can go on the floors at any time. Suitable producer should come forward for it. Other wise I am taking one by one for my own banner.

With popularity and ability on the one side and nature to convince the producers on the originals why you are also after remakes?

I don't say remake is wrong. Good scripts should come in all languages. It is like how books are translated. I promise you that by bringing quality remakes I am not just doing it frame by frame. I am adjusting to our framework. I know that I am a responsible person.

What happened to the 'Veeru' film where you launched your son Pankajkumar?

That is a separate kind of film. But it did not get the right share of feedback. I have seen such situations in the film in my real life. I tell you frankly that I did not made it with awards in my mind.

How 'Sevanthi Sevanthi' has shaped up?

I have finished the project and its audio release is taking place in the presence of chief minister Kumaraswamy at Tumkur on Sunday (2nd April 2006).

You have spent Rs.40 lakhs on a song in 'Sevanthi Sevanthi'. Is it true?

Yes. Including the graphic expenses it comes to so much of expenditure. I have not shown that song even for the producer S.A.Chinne Gowda.

How is that you have suddenly accepted to act?

That is because of the affection shown to me. The producer and team of 'Honeymoon Express' have promised to work on my dates available. I know popular actor Jaggesh from the early age and so is cameraman Anaji Nagaraj. We all came up from scratch. I had not acted since two years. My last film was 'Pukka Chukka'.

What are the other assignments on hand?

I have a film for Shivrajkumar and a few for home production besides the work for television serials and tele films.

How many television serials you have completed so far?

Parvathi, Ambika, Durga, Bhagirathi, Chandrika, Vaishali, Dum Dum Dum, Sumathi, Ishwari, Suryavamsha are the mega television serials that are very popular

You have the distinction of working with all stars in Kannada….

It is my fortune. I have directed Dr.Rajkumar film 'Shabdavedi' all his sons' films, Dr.Vishnuvardhana and Ravichandran films too.

What are the awards you have bagged so far?

Veerappanayaka, Shabdavedi and Chandra Chakori have bagged the state awards. I have got eight awards given by the Kannada Film Directors Association, 17 times received honors from Chitra Rasikara Sangha, also the winner of Cinema Express and Sandesh award.

Has your daily life changed a bit?

No right from my start I am working for 18 hours a day. I get up at 4 am and on sets I will be at 6 am. Night at 9.30 pm I go to sleep. I have not compromised on my timetable and I will not do it so.

How do you feel working under some other director?

I would function like an artiste. Whatever the director narrates I would do it with absolute discipline. I would not poke my nose on any issue.
