    Tuesday, June 12, 2007
His name is Jolly Bastin. His work is not of jolly nature. He rose from a mechanic to a danger man on silver screen providing thrilling moments. The mind blowing stunt he does with various kinds of vehicles has given him a pretty good position in South Indian film industry. 400 films from fighter to action director in 20 years of career is no mean task.

Meet this exhilarating stunt director. Excerpts of an interview:

Why do you want to be in dangerous work of stunts?

That gives me thrill. I have immense liking. Off late the security measures is giving me more confidence. I work on my stunts in the home. Then I transform it at the shooting spot. This stunt work has almost become like gulping a glass of water for me.

You have worked for all stars films in South India?

In Kannada I have worked for more than 120 films starting as fighter in the camp of action director Horse Babu. That was for 'Prema Loka'. As an independent fight master I started from 'Putnanja' of V.Ravichandran the dream merchant of Kannada cinema. I have done action in about 20 Malayalam films. In Mammooty, Mohanlal, Srinivasan films I have done action scene. In Telugu mega star Chiranjeevi 'Annayya' I have done stunts, in Tamil the films like Dhum of Silambarasan I worked as solo fighter. I have completed an assignment for Hindi films director Ramgopal Verma's 'Shock'. I have utilized five fighters from Karnataka in that film.

    What are the present assignments?

I am working for 'Bhimoos Bang Bang Kids' and 'NH1' Kannada films.

How was the tough phase in your career?

People in the industry did not believe me in the beginning. I proved my mettle. I was an ordinary cleaner of vehicles in a service station. I struggled in my work. That struggle only kept me to a comfortable standing in the south Indian film industry.

What is the breath taking moments of your work?

I do lot of chase scene with number of vehicles. That pays more also. In half a day I have done three canon blast scene and one bike jump. Two cars on air with another car just below on road is the new stunt I have done.

Do you have any training school?

I am planning to have one for the traffic police of Karnataka. I have given application to police department. It is because the traffic cops in Bangalore on bikes cannot catch a thief of my caliber. We have the Cheetah section in police department. I have given some clues for raising the speed of bikes in 'Police Sanchike' television serial.

With computer graphics today is it not easy to bring dangerous stunts on screen?

Computer graphics helps us no doubt. But for that we have to do the planning.

Mentally which was the most disturbing stunt for you?

It was for 'Rakshasa' Kannada film with Shivarajkumar in my vehicle. I could not get the sleep for many days after completing that task in which we both escaped narrowly.

Your bones are intact in your body?

No, I have faced injuries more than 3 to 4 times. My collar bone, ribs, knee are damaged. Yet I am recognized as one of the three best stunt directors in South India.

What is the biggest work you want to do in a film?

I am planning one on the lines of 'Pushpaka Vimana'. It was a silent movie. In my film which I want to direct there will be no dialogues. Start to finish action.

    Who are your family members?

I have a wife whose name is Lovely. Amith is my son studying in 7th standard and Nidhi is my daughter studying in first standard.

Lovely is aware of all your stunts?

Lovely is not aware of my stunts. I have not explained it to her.
